PCIe to PCI adapters. Is it worth it?

I updated my motherboard to a Zotac so I can support a C2Q processor. This meant that my PCI based Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer is useless. I paid $79.00 at the time so its a pill that is hard for me to swallow. I even had to buy special 7.1 cables that are made specifically for that card. I think that was like $20.00 also. So I have invested $100.00 in the card.

Someone in another thread had brought something up and it triggered me to look for a PCIe to PCI adapter. I binged it, and results actually came up.

Here is what I found. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-165-_-Product

Are these things any good? Also will this work with a PCIe x16 slot? My understanding is that you can use a PCIe x1 card in a PCIe x16 slot.

If it will work in a PCIe x16 slot then that will save me lots of money. i would only have to spend about $45.00 instead of $100.00+ on a PCIe version of the same card. Plus i like the way the Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer works.

Aside from being a bit harder to keep mounted securely, there isn't any reason why that shouldn't work.

And yes, it will work in an X-16 slot, shouldn't be an issue on that side of things.

Thanx for that advice. There is another bracket that goes with this card to make them secure. I also have to buy the low profile bracket for the soundcard.

Well, I have good news for you then. I got one of these a couple of months back when I switched motherboards. I wanted to continue using my SB PCI card. Apparently it's just a crap shoot whether it works with your particular hardware or not. It did not work for mine. I'd be happy to drop it in the mail for you. Send me a PM if you want to give it a try.

Thanx for the offer. Only issue is that my main system isn't finished, so I have no way of testing till about January. What type of problems did you have? Did it even recognize the SB Card?

What SB card were you trying to use it with?

It didn't even see the sound card, which was a Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS.

OH God.... That makes me nervous. Maybe I can call StarTech and ask what devices work.

Today I did get my PCIe to PCI card. I didnt test on my main PC because I havent bought the processor yet. So I decided to test it on my Dual Core Pentium PC here at work. It had a PCIe slot.

When I installed the card into the PC, then turned it on, I was greeted with a install notice that a PCI to PCI bridge was installing. As soon as it finished, it immediately said that a Audio Device has been detected. I installed the SB drivers and then restarted the PC. Card works perfectly. I did notice the card didnt push out as much volume, but seeing it will be connected to amps it didnt really matter.

So yes this PCIe to PCI adapter does work. I did call StarTech and they told me that with PCI devices that this thing supports, its kind of a hit or miss situation. I am just glad it worked out for me.
