    Front drive bay ports question.

I want to add some extra ports behind my dash somewhere or maybe in my console next to my shifter and found this front drive bay panel interesting and had a question.

If I snip the wires to add an extra 10-15ft of wires to extend this panel from my computer in the trunk to my dash will I have any issues?
Also, how would I go about powering the usb ports so I could run things like my portable usb sata drive and charge my iphone?

10-15ft is above passive usb spec. you would need to use some active cables to get that kind of length. otherwise, you will have issues.

it might be best to install a automotive powered hub behind the dashboard, and then connect this to the powered hub-- it would ensure enough juice for your devices, and would only require 1 active usb cable to run to the front to get the data.

Thanks so much for pointing this out about extensions for USB because I had no idea! Just read a few things about it and already ordered an active cable.
I've tried search for a hub but really cant find anything that would be flush mountable.
Do you have any suggestions if the drive bay panel is not a good option?
Wonder if I could splice into the panel's wiring and splice a short 1ft usb cord plugged in the active cord

i was thinking of hiding something like this inside the dash:

or a cheaper option would be:
    http://store.mp3car.com/Carnetix_CNX..._p/pwr-016.htm

this is so that the power from the pc doesn't need to travel all 15ft--with the small gauge of wire used in pc's, and the added distance, even with active cables, i fear that high draw items would not work correctly..

i think that drive bay panel is fine--i use a similar type setup in my own car. while i use it about a 1/100th of the time that i use the carpc(one of the reasons i would not want to spend too much money on it), it does come in handy compared to diving under the seats to plug something in.

but any of the ways, including the one in your second post, should work fine.
