Post I know it's trite, but please look at my inverter prob =)

    thanks in advance!
I've got a slim desktop system as an mp3computer, and I'm using a 300w inverter.

I plugged the computer into the inverter and that into the cig.adapter, listened to music with headphones, and it sounded just fine. Revved the engine, etc, sounded great.

Now, my car's at the car audio shop, and I now have amps and better speakers in the car. The inverter is hard-wired to the battery, and grounded to the chassis. Apparently (I haven't heard it myself) audio from the computer now sounds like complete crap! I'm trying to get a head-start on this problem before I head to the stereo shop tommorow.

The computer sounded great when powered through the cig.adapter, and nothing was grounded... now it sounds horrible. Granted, I was using headphones before and now I'm using amps etc, but can that account for the difference?

Sounds like my first step should be to ground the computer's power supply (it's NOT grounded now) and make sure the inverter is grounded properly.

I didn't find any other posts with a similar problem... What could cause the audio to sound fine when powered through the cig.adapter, but horrible when hardwired and going to amps?

    Any input is greatly appreciated!
    -Brian

Well, cig lighter does have a built in ground, but every ground in car is basically the same, so as long as you are positive that the ground you are using now is unpainted, pure car metal, then you're fine.
You did say one thing scary, your PC is NOT grounded? That's a real big problem. Remember the the power supply gives ground to the PC and all the other parts as long as it is ground (ie, 3 prong). If your PC is not pluged in by all three prongs, you need to ground it...

Thanks guys for your input! I haven't actually been able to look at the situation yet, as my car is in another state =) But I'm trying to get a head-start on the problem.

I'm almost 100% sure that the computer *is* plugged in w/ a 3 prong plug. Now that you mention it, I believe that the inverter may *not* be properly grounded. It's bolted to the chassis (I hear...) but there may need to be paint that must be removed.

Any other input is greatly appreciated.
Hopefully I'll check out the situation tonight and I'll get back to you guys!

BTW, do pure sine wave inverters exist? Are they *very* expensive? heh...If not, where can I find one?

    Thanks,

    Cool

The problem is a ground loop between your computer and the head unit/radio/whatever. Ground the chasis of the PC directly to the car.

I looked at the car yesterday. It turned out that the metal DB25 sleeve that I used for an extension cable needed to be grounded. It's grounded through the computer... but I guess I had a ground loop? Anyway, Sounds perfect now, inverter is grounded to the chassis, metal cable part is grounded to the head unit. This is the reason that it sounded perfect through the cig.lighter. I'm lucky that that's all it took to solve my inverter problems =) ...a wire came out of my lcd and caused garbled output... but that's another story.

    Thanks for the input guys!

Brian, so you solved your problem by grounding a DB25 sleeve???? I don't know what you mean by that. Is that a DB25 to DB9 adaptor? or a DB25 serial extension cable?

I gotta really weird sound problem, when everything is hooked up it sounds great. But as soon as I remove the power connector to my 5.6" LCD the sound is just TERRIBLE!! The power to the LCD comes from the cig adapter and the power to the computer comes from the battery. But as long as the power connector is hooked up to the LCD, the sound is great. i really dont understand why this happens... any help?

    moahdib,
I wish I knew how to solve your problem.

Just to clarify, I converted a printer cable I had to a DB25 extension cable. Radio Shack sells DB25 connector pins and sleevs, so that's how I fabricated one end of the cable. The sleeve is completely metal.
