Any recommendations for a mini-itx motherboard?

Hi guys. I'm looking to replace my 5 year old Via Epia MII motherboard with something more up to date. Doesn't need to be particularly powerful, but I'd like it to be able to run Ride Runner, navigation (iGo), play mp3s and videos and handle OBD-II software without struggling.

I'd like it to have SATA, and it needs to fit inside my existing [/URLT]Cubid 2699R case, which has an internal DC-DC convertor (60W?), which is powered by a 90W Carnetix CNX-P1290.

It doesn't need to be lightening quick. As long as it covers the above without costing a fortune I'll be very happy!

2 years ago I purchased a Zotac ION board for my media centre that had a dual core N330 Atom processor (it's no longer being made) - I was pretty pleased with that.

    Thanks for any recommendations.

Any of the Intel mini-itx Atom boards should suit your needs. The D510MO is a good dependable board that requires little power. You can also check out the new AMD Fusion mini-itx boards. I have the E350M1 (well, it's at ASRock right now, getting RMA'd) and it also draws very little power. All mini-itx dimensions are the same, so those will fit in your case - but I don't know how high your case is, so that's something you'll have to check to make sure the board+processor will fit.

Many thanks for the reply. The E350M1 looks great, but what was the problem you had with it?

what kegobeer said as far as processors.

i prefer to only buy zotac and asus boards as i used to work with hundreds of asus boards with a very low failure rate, but would also recommend msi and gigabyte boards.

When connected via DVI or HDMI, the monitor would not display the post screen or the UEFI screen.

I've installed over 20 AsRock E350M1 boards - none of them had any problems. I highly recommend it; I'm preparing my own CarPC based on this and it's just great.

One thing though - if you decide to use AsRock Instant Boot, don't use the "fast" mode in the car. At home it works just fine, but in the car it will cause problems. Use the normal mode - mine boots in 12 seconds from power on to full CentraFuse. Granted, I'm using Win7 and a fast SSD, but it's still fast.

I'm in the same boat, finally I went with the Intel D525mw($75-Amazon). I wanted passive cooling and cheap.

Thanks for the responses guys. I went for the Asus E35M1-I DELUXE Zacate mini-itx Motherboard, which I'm putting in my HTPC - as it can always do with more power. The Zotac mini-itx board that was in the htpc that I mentioned earlier will go in the car.

    Cheers guys!

What kind of problems? I'm looking at this very board for my next build, mainly for the UEFI so I can get as fast a boot time as possible, as it will be powering my dash. If this will cause issues in a car I will need to look somewhere else.

    Hi fxt,

I have an AS Rock A330GC. Would you advise windows 7 for this board with normal instant boot mode?
I have a normal drive though. I find it takes ages to shut down as it has to reboot and then go into hibernation. Do you know of any way to quicken this up?

    thanks,

    Degsy
