Post Connecting Seiko 4x20 LCD display

Hi, I just got a 4x20 Seiko LCD display and I was wondering the exact specifics on connecting it to the parallel port.

I followed the schematics found on the internet and successfully sautered pins 4 through 14 from the lcd to the parallel port. However I am having trouble with the first three pins. Do i just directly connect the 2nd pin (requires 5v) to the red wire of an open power source in my computer? Do i really need to get the pot amp thingies for pins 1 and 3 to adjust the contrast (if i don't want to adjust the contrast)?

You need some sort of resistance to acquire the proper voltage to send for backlighting and the text. The easiest way to do it is with potentiometers but if you find the exact resistance you can just use resistors... but that would be difficult. Besides you might want to adjust it later.

Just go to your local electronics shop and get a 100 ohm and a 10K ohm potentiometer and wire them like this: (follow links)
