    Exclamation Tripp-Lite Powerverter KILLS COMPUTERS!

So far the 300 watt powerverter has killed 2 of my computers, it fry's some tiny chip and that chip it frys (same on both computers) is the one that controls the keyboard, so I get the cool little "Press F1..." screen, also when I have just a toaster plugged in the inverter, it blows the fuse in my truck! Do I have enough of a loss to consider a lawsuit against Tripp-Lite? Their inverter has killed 2 computer mainboards!

my computer got fried too. i just posted about it. but it was my power supply not the main board.

the funny thing is for like 6 months i've been using it on a home audio amp in my car, and the amp still works. connected it to the computer for 2 hours and the computers dead

Crikey! My toaster is rated @ 900W! If I plugged it into a 300W inverter, I might as well shoot myself in the head! Of course it will blow a fuse! And you're lucky that's all it does!!!

But as far as the computer problems you Boy's are having, I would check to see if the inverter is actually designed to run a PC. Some aren't and they will cook anything that resembles a switchmode power supply.

An inverter's job, obviously, is to convert DC to AC. On a graph, DC is just a straight line, while AC will show as a sine wave. The inverter has to generate an artificial sine wave to generate AC current. Most inverters will do a square sine wave or something similar, which does work for things like amps, but might have problems with a computer.

You might have enough for a lawsuit but I bet they have something in the manual about such things. Read the fine print they probably state we are not responable if this fries your toaster/computer etc if you use it.

Also if you find a lawyer it will be a waste of your money. You probably will not win and if you do just for the cost of the mobos. Save the thousands you spent on a lawyer and court cost and go buy a new mobo and a different invertor or DC-DC converter. Also before you take it to court make sure it wasn't something stupid you did like hooked up the wires wrong or something like that.

I couldn't have hooked up the wires wrong, as I plugged it into the cigarette lighter with the adapter that came with the unit, and from there directly to the PC, they say not to use a surge protector for some odd reason, prolly messes with the sine wave...

    dont give up!!

really its not that big of a hasle. I am on my second carputer in 2 months! I upgraded.. and i am working on my home mp3 system and a buddies car system. They really arent that hard to get working correctly. Granted if you add all the bells and whistles you might encounter more probs but a basic mp3 system works great and takes no time (and very little money) to set up.

I've been working with PCs for a long time and I would HIGHLY doubt that the inverter is to blame for frying a keyboard controller chip. Between the two computers, did you use any of the same parts? (keyboard, mouse, power supply, anything) How do know that it burns up the controller chip? Where is the PC mounted and in what type of casing?
