A higher power wifi adapter and/or antenna. The antenna should be an external antenna to prevent signals being blocked by the big metal box that is your vehicle body.
So my wifi reception leaves A LOT to be desired. zotac mini. I bought an extended antenna 2.5X the size of the original, and the signal damn well nearly disappeared. I'm hoping someone has some simple insight to increase the signal reception.
My carpc is in the trunk. I purchased an external antenna, ran the wire from the trunk to the rear window deck. Like DarquePervert said, the trunk is a big metal box that blocks a lot of signal. Up in the rear window the glass blocks a whole lot less signal.
I have my USB wifi stick in my rear brakelight housing.
Which is at the bottom of my back window.
Reception is pretty good, parked across the road from my house this morning and it picked up and connected to my home network no problem.
That includes the drive plus my wireless hub is buried under the stairs.
I have a usb wireless N-adapter mounted in my trunk area, almost resembles a normal jump drive in size. Now, I do have an suv with an open trunk area, but it picks up a lot of range. For example, I was sitting at a light, and picked up all the corner business' wifi and even the ones that were half a block back as well. Cost a year ago was prob like 25ish if even that. Maybe the onboard wifi adapter (even with new antenna) isn't cutting it. Just an opinion though!
To further define my in-car wifi: The carpc has the wifi antenna, which is just so the PC can a) connect to external (home) wifi when necessary. I have a 3G modem in the trunk. The 3G stick is also on the rear window deck. The router is also an access point for wifi in the car. This works fine. The signal from it does not go far beyond the car itself but every device in the car can connect to the network and have internet. It works quite well this way.
OK, so pretty much I bought an extension that is no good. Because I wasn't really complaining that my extension can't pick up anything at a distance through the trunk, I was complaining that the thing actually killed my reception all together...router right beside the thing and reception is one bar with the extended antenna. So, can you guys just list the antennas/extensions that you have? I would prefer to just swap out the antenna, instead of getting a usb thing, but I will do whatever I need to at the end of the day.
Not sure what kind of antenna / extension you mean. I have an external antenna that is about 8" tall, on a magnetic mounting base. I would not call it an "extension". Perhaps you mean just a wire with the standard little rubber antenna that comes on the back of some routers and PCs?
I hope I didn't leave the impression that the 3G wifi router in the trunk does any good for connecting to the house network. It does fine for car interior.
The remote antenna is connected directly to the carpc so it can connect to home wifi, and also connect to the router.
If I can, I will take a pic of my antenna if that will help.
I'm going to guess that maybe it's a bad antenna. Can't tell from here.
Do you have a router or something you can put it on and see if it works in that situation?
This is more like what I use in the car:
