    Cooling: m9000 and Opus

For those of you that have crammed an Epia m9000 and an Opus into a small space have any of you had any trouble with cooling? Do I *need* a fan, or can I just cut a hole in the top of the case to let the heat escape? How actively do I need to cool a setup like this?

The Opus has an operating temperature range of -25 celsius to 70 degrees celsius. I cannot find the operating range for the Epia, or my laptop hard drive (yet).

I have the Epia in the bottom of an 8x10x4 project box, with the power supply attached to the lid just over the area with the processor and heat sync. I am probably going to install a fan on the other side of the case, and put a few holes on the other side, then pull the air across the components.

Thoughts, experiences, etc would all be welcome.

always use as many fans as your space will allow. If your computer crashes you can eliminate heat as the cause.

I would tend to disagree with a philosophy that uses as many fans as possible. Fans make noise, consume power, and as mechanical devices fail more often than other components. The ideal is zero fans (thus the popularity of many Epia boards) in a water / air tight case. Given that this ideal is unachievable, I still want to get as close as possible to it.

I prefer to remove temperature as a cause by learning what the safe operating range is for each component in my system, and then monitoring the system to insure that I do not exceed these reanges. I add vents, fans, etc only as needed to achieve the desired range.

I think a small hole or slits cut above the HSF and an exhaust fan mounted somewhere would do. Nothing too big maybe a decent 60mm that has some good CFMs. You don't want that hot air sitting in there. And believe me that south bridge will create enough of that.

One other thing I would recomend is get a Zalman HS, like this one and put it on the south bridge and mount the exhaust fan somewhere near it so it gets a little more air movement.

Take all this with a grain of salt. If you live in a very warm place then maybe you might want to use a larger fan or something that pushes more CFMs.

    Hope this helped. Good luck..

Thanks for the suggestion Defiler. I just picked one of the zallman heat sinks up.

I thought I read on the mini-itx website in the review of the eNote case that their is a good replacement for the processor heat sink / fan too. Has anyone tried that?

I am using a MODed Vantec Iceberq copper video card HSF on my CPU. works pretty well. Although I am thinking, when I have time I am going to go with an all zalman (3 total 1 CPU 1 NB 1 SB) HS setup with one fan blowing accross all three. May or may not work...
