Thread: LCD Touchscreen

1. I have a 10.4" LCD touchscreen that I bought for $300. (search this forum to find the URL--it was on ebay and the guy has several left)It is friggin awesome. The way it works is that there is a panel in front of the actual screen that detects where your finger is. When you touch the screen, it basically moves the mouse to wherever your finger is and left-clicks.

2. Those units are terribly expensive, and I dont know if you can get them with a touchscreen

3. we need to know what kind of car you have before we can suggest to you where to put it

There has been tons of messages on this subject so doing a search would bring back all the info you need and more.

I've recently posted a message that I'll repost for you that talks specificly about touchscreens. I've been looking to buy one and I'm days away now. I am still debating on getting the 10.4" touchscreen from www.allelec.com OR the 6.4" touchscreen at http://www.flat-panel.com/monhome.htm.

I'd get the cheaper 10" (@ $550 w/ touchscreen) but I keep hearing it's too big for most cars and it would definitely NOT fit in a dash radio enclosure.

I'm planning on mounting mine (probably the 6.4" @ $850 US) on a mount from www.ram-mount.com They have great mounting solutions that are easily adjustable AND removable so it's not permanent and theft is discouraged. I do agree that a in-dash mount would be really cool and would hide the LCD from the eyes of thieves.

To answer other questions you had... check out the links provided but basicly they come with a controller card and they do simulate mouse dragging / dropping and dbl-clicking.

I can't wait to order mine.

ahh, but it isnt mounted yet. I have a 97 full-size chevy pickup, and there is LOTS of space in the dash. there is a 1.5 DIN radio, a 1 DIN A/C control unit, and a 1 DIN pocket where a factory CD player would normally go. that is 3.5 DIN. Like i said, lots of space.

here is the plan:
I'm gonna use a USB radio device for my FM radio stations. Theres some space

The A/C unit is going to be relocated to the custom floor console that I am building (pictures COMING). this floor console will house the computer, A/C controls, DVD, HDD, and Power Supply. Theres some more space.

Using my mad dremelling skills, I'm going to cut a hole in my dash console and mount the screen flush with the outer portion of the dash console.

THEN I'm gonna make a cover out of sheet metal to go over the screen and, with the help of an autobody guy, make it look smooth.

THEN I'm gonna take it (the dash console) to my friend who works for NASA and have him cover it in carbon fiber. Either that or I'll paint it.

thats the plan anyway. of course, having a computer to power the screen would be nice too......
