Double-DIN carputer case vs. Remotely mounted case

Hi everyone, I just picked up a used Infill G4 double-DIN carputer but I think I might be looking at building something new since the G4 is kind of outdated.

I'm posisbly looking at building a new carputer, but I'm not sure of the difference between using a double-DIN enclosure (like this: http://store.mp3car.com/Black_BBX_1_..._p/enc-045.htm) versus a separate case mounted remotely.

Can you essentially install the same hardware and have the same features between the two different types of cases? Or does the double-DIN case limit you? If the double-DIN limits you, what differences can I expect when it comes to options for hardware and whatnot?

I mainly want to you the carputer for multimedia and Internet. I won't be doing video processing, using Photoshop, or any of that type of high-demanding software. I just want to play music, video (digital files, Blu-Ray, DVD, YouTube) and have a good enough graphics processor for providing great video quality, and cruise the Internet. Having several USB ports is a must, but I'm not too picky on where the USB ports are located because I can always run USB extensions to my glove box or something. I will also want HDMI as well as RCA video inputs and outputs. Navigation, FM Radio, and reverse camera support would be great too.

Can I accomplish all of the above with a Double-DIN case, or should I be looking into a separate case mounted somewhere else in the car? Thanks in advance!

I picked up one of the double din cases Derrick from NY has listed on eBay.

It's info is starting on page 137 of the "transflective display for $137" topic and the case is pretty nice. It fits mini-itx boards fine.

Thanks again, I just checked it out and will be sure to watch your progress. Hope everything works out for you.... it's starting to sound like fitment of the case, and fitment of the screen might be an issue for people.

I am using a double DIN case and everything works well.

Not sure but the double din probably requires a smaller mobo than a "amp" like case.

Once beyond that its just a matter of cramped space and getting cables to fit.

I just finished fitting my DDIN case in the dash, and for me the biggest hurdle was the depth. Most car stereo's only go 13 to 17cm deep, but an in dash pc needs 17cm just for the board, 2cm for the screen, and 2cm to plug in VGA and other connections. I had to do some serious cutting to fit.
