Raspberry Pi and Audi RNS-E

I have an Audi A4 with an RNS-E unit. I was wondering if anyone has used a Raspberry Pi in their car? In particular, if you have used one with an RNS-E then I would like to know how it works! I reckon it would be easy enough to work but I don't have any idea how I would get the buttons on the RNS-E unit to send signals to the RPi. If anyone has any resources they think that would help then I would much appreciate it.

I've been planning to replace a RNS-E unit with a carputer (PC) for a while now. So far I've bought most of the parts needed.

The plan was to replace the screen with a 7" touch (it's a bit larger but I think I should be able to make it work) and keep the stock buttons and controls. I was planning on using phidgets to interface with the controls and replace the encoder control (rotary control) with a PR-1000 haptic unit.

How this setup would work for a PI I'm not sure though.

I am not sure what a RNS-E unit is...but someone did put a raspberry pi in their audi before. See this link.

Ive had a rassp pi for a few mths now and whilst fun, I really think a cheap netbook will workout cheaper,faster and more robust in the long run.

Have you been using the pi in the car? I have a couple of them. One is set up in the bedroom as a media PC and it is working extremely well. I would be very happy with it's performance in the car and it only costs about £50 for the pi, SD card and case.

Be interested in how you have the car pi setup

Ive looked hi and low for info but there not much out there.Openelec is to locked down for my needs and most of the xbmc distros are just to flaky at the mo
I suppose the biggest issue for me is the lack of gps software that will run on the pi and also support my location

Have you tried raspbmc? It is currently what I use and I don't have any issues with it. Not sure about GPS software I'm afraid.
