check out this link...... I think it might be on the track of what you are after....

not english, but a circuit diagram and a winamp plugin screenshot.... should give you a good hunting start.....
anyone seen those Sony joysticks you can buy as extras for Sony car stereos? I think there is a small wire you hide inside the care dash which the joystick glues on the steering column next to you wiper/lights switches.
As this is just a bundle of switches, could this be easily hacked and wired up to a joystick or keyboard port?
sounds like it would be a neater solution than a keypad. I think I have seen the joysticks for about UK£20.
I am only building a home player, as I dont have car, but Im just curious

Project - GAME OVER :(

That link leads you to a guy who did the sony joystick mod for his empeg, might be a starting point, and he includes his source

Magnetik,
that link you posted is broken. What did this guy manage to do with the Sony joystick remote? Controlled winamp?
If that's what he did, could you post a working link?
Funny, I just happened to post about it in another thread.

It's actually an "analog" device. Every switch activates a different resistor, except for one, which is a "true" button. So you wire it up to the joystick port, and read a joystick axis to tell which switch has been pressed. Anyway, I've got it working, based on info I found here:
http://llg.cubic.org/tools/sonyrm/
You have to put together a small circuit for the joystick port, _AND_ write some software. Unless you use XMMS under Linux -- in which case just get the XMMS module on the page above.

Oms,
could you do me a BIG favour, please?
Could you test your Sony joystick on a Windows+Winamp computer and tell me if it is working properly with one of the three existing joystick control Winamp plug-ins?
Do you happen to know any other software/plug-in that let's you use it?
I wouldn't like to buy the joystick and build the adapter for no reason.

Dimitris -
No, it won't work with Winamp plug-ins, at least not until someone writes a plug-in specifically for the Sony. (Aren't there any Windows programmers on this forum? Hello?)
Reason is, the Sony works by shunting in a different resistor for every button. To the computer, it appears as if a joystick has been moved along the X axis to a certain very precise position; every button corresponds to a different position... it's a fairly unique setup, so no generic plug-in will work.

Thanx Oms!
Unfortunately I don't have a clue when it comes to programming.
So... any programmers out there interested in this Winamp control alternative? I could make a very proffessional looking solution!

Wow, my neurons are firing faster than a gatling gun.
If you could let me know where I can find a circuit diagram for the Sony joystick, I'm 99% sure I could creat an interface circuit to allow it to be used with the existing joystick plugin, or even a key pad plugin
On the side my idea is based around using the resistors as a potential divider, the output of which is connected to a series of comparitors, which then goes through some simple logic and into the PC, cunning!?!?
Could one of the sparkies out there coment on this idea and possible recermend a comparitor chip.

And you say people actually pay money for M$ Windows?

Total re-design underway: on the whole progress is very slow as the car is taking up too much time :)
