Joystick trouble

Well I had a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick in my car for years. It finally stopped working. So I bought a new one thinking it would just pop in an work. Well it doesn't.

Im running XP, roadrunner, and Joy2mouse. When I plugged the new joystick in, the cursor immediately moves to the left of the screen. Somehow I got it to stop doing that. I don't know how. Now I can move the cursor around the screen with the toggle type button.

On my old joystick, I had button 5 skip to the next track on the playlist and button 3 go to the previous. Button 6 increased the volume and button 4 decreased it.

I somehow had the trigger set up like a shift button. If I would depress the trigger and hit button 5, it would simulate a left mouse button click. If I held the trigger and pressed button 6, it would act as a right mouse button click.

I have been playing with the settings in joy2mouse all day. I can't figure this out. Can anyone help me assign actions to these buttons on this joystick?

Wow, its probably been 8-10 years since I had that joystick in my car. Let's see if I can help. First, some observations. Because I have run into this kind of problem before, I always buy a backup for hardware once I'm confident that I will keep it in my system. Buying the backup as soon as possible tends to insure that both have the same version of internal circuit boards and drivers. You really can't expect them to keep these things around for decades and not update the manufacturing/programming.

Next some questions. Have you updated the drivers? Have you checked to insure all the buttons are working through the XP Control Panel/Game Controllers? Is Joy2Mouse loading the correct XML file? If everything else is working and your RR keytbl.ini has all the appropriate codes, try the attached J2M file and see how it works for you.

They look identical from the outside. But you are right. The boards are different and the software has been updated. I like your backup idea. I'll have to purchase another to keep on hand.

I did update the driver for the joystick. After playing around with joy2mouse for way too long, I finally figured it out on my desktop. Now to get it working in my car... It was so long since I worked with joy2mouse I forgot how to program the buttons.

Yeah, with the Logitech its not too bad, my Saitek's are $200 each new which makes it one helluva investment. So I'm forever watchful on eBay looking for broke ones on the cheap. Having them in two different cars doesn't help much either.

The updated internals is a pain in the Arse. Sometimes they'll work with the old drivers; sometimes the new drivers will be backward compatible; sometimes you're just screwed (ask the original Fusion Brain folks like me).

Your mention very little about your joy2mouse programming. I almost tripled the available commands in my above attachment by utilizing numerous two-button combinations. You might want to take a look at it just for grins.

Thanks again. I did look at your files. Actually I had one saved on my computer from when I originally setup my joystick. I believe you helped me out before.

I really don't do much with the joystick. I have it setup with the trigger as a shift button. Buttons 3,4,5, and 6 control my vol + -, and track + -. With the shift depressed, 5 and 6 act as left and right mouse buttons. I use the side button to play/pause the music. And the POV moves the cursor when I need that.

I found some differences between the old and new joystick in the RR Key TBL. I used the Keycode app to get the new numbers. Once I placed them into the TBL next to the appropriate action, it started working.

One thing I still can't figure out about this. When I first started working on the new joystick, the cursor would immediately move to the top left of the screen. I couldn't move it away with the joystick or mouse. Then I did something, I don't know what, and it stopped. Now when I open RR, it does it again. If I click my mouse button, it allows me to move the cursor like normal. Weird...

I had that problem too initially. Startup of the joystick is based on the XP game controller driver. Since we removed the joystick base, it goes back to wherever it was set when removed. I believe you can fix it by reattaching the base controls and recentering the joystick via base controls and the XP control panel/game controller/properties window.
