Lightbulb why do u guy spend so much on audio?

wow i thought that so pep will read title a make wrong idea owell. i mean why do u go out and speed 1g to 1/2 g to buy audio processors when you computer alrdy can do that i mean it stupid. and who can aford to by a creative live 5.1 for $40 or use on board ac3 5.1 off the via mini mobos. then go and buy a 5 chanle amp which you would have to any with the procesor. then from the computer u run earphone jack to rca do two for front and back. i mean how much cheaper it that. or a 4 chanale amp with a passthrow and hook up a seppert amp for supp and the u have 5.1 again. and all the rich guy could set up a 6.1 ss with the creative audigie. i mean so much cheaper. i did search the forms on this but know really confrunt the two. if u want to bring back so dead links thats cool with me.

Firstly, if you are from an English speaking country you should feel embarrassed. Either for your lack of proper language skills or for your nations poor educational system. The preceding post was terrible.

I believe your questions was "Why would anyone want to use a hardware Digital Signal Processor (DSP) when a carputer can do the same thing."

My answer to answer your question is this:

1.) A DSP usually allows for time correction.

What is time correction? Time correction is the process whereby you use millisecond delays in transmission to make the sound appear to be originating from somewhere else. This allows me to "move" the sound from the center of the cars cabin to in front and above the dash. The position where sound at a concert originates from. This is known as "imaging".

2.) A DSP will typically do a superior job of audio decoding.

Try as it might, the Sound Blaster series of cards are predominantly software driven. As such, their decoding depends on how good the software is and how much of the CPU is freed to process the audio. With a DSP, you remove that load from the PC and move it to a solid state hardware solution. This frees the PC to perform other tasks such as audio de-compression of MP3's.

Disregard this statement if you are using a truly hardware driven soundcard such as a Turtle Beach or M.Audio soundcard.

3.) A DSP will work without the PC being in use.

With a DSP I can decode CD Audio and radio without having to have the PC in use. In addition I have yet to see ANY PC software which can perform the same parametric EQ functions that a good audio DSP will perform.

Long story short is if you are concerned about audio and are wanting to integrate a carputer INTO a system, a DSP is your best choice. If you are planning on using the carputer as your primary audio source it is likely that audio quality is NOT your primary concern and as such a DSP is overkill for your application.

I believe the audigy 2 has some timing/imaging features that do what Skippman described.

DSP FX look like a nice software DSP. They have a plugin dedicated to Parametric EQ as well as many other effects. They have plugins for winamp, direct sound, and live processing mode from sound card inputs.

Its gotten some pretty impressive reviews. But, it doesn't come cheap - $149.

I couldn't figure out how to use the demo, but if I did, I probably couldn't figure what all the knobs/adjustments do. Take a look and see what you think.

Thank you for figuring out what he was asking . I read it three times and couldnt make sense of what he was ranting about, or if he had accidentially started a new thread instead of replying.

I give up on the DSP FX software.

But for Audigy2 owners, if you want to play with Parametric EQ and other dsp effects, try the EAX console.

There is a tab dedicated to effects with listing after listing of predefined dsp effects. They have staging effects (concert, hall, etc), equalizer effects (drum, bass, techno, etc), and a bunch of other categories. You can also create custom effects using the predefined as templates. The interface doesn't look very intuitive, no knobs or sliders. But it does have seem to have a lot of tweaking capabilities including gains and parametric eq settings.
