Can I use an AV-7211 touch-screen double din with a car pc ?

    Hey guys,

I have an opertunity to get my hands on an (AV-7211 deck really cheap ($50), and I've always wanted to setup a car-pc in my car
but couldn't justify $500 for a decent touch screen.

I happen to know I can get a small car-pc for about 2-300, but I don't know if I could get this touch screen to work.

Anybody know if this device could work?

Also, while I'm at it :

The car-pc would have 3 main functions desired :

Radio, Sirius Satellite (up in canada), and Navigation, and preferably OBDII read-outs.

Can anybody recommend a cheap/reasonably priced method to set all this up ?

If it means anything I purchased a copy of Centrafuse for windows about 2 years ago and never got my setup going (or done for that matter).

I am very pc and electronics literate, I just figured someone here has solved this setup many times over (without it costing a fortune, would like to keep the total cost under $500).

    Thanks in advance,

Many have asked about inputting PC's to head units but I am not aware of anyone actually making it work on any brand/model. Itlooks like the only input that unit is equipped with is composite video connector (Yellow RCA) and if that is the case, you won't be able to get a decent image from the PC through it. You could add a second screen for the PC, they are getting fairly cheap now........

Video signal is relatively easy. You'd need to get composite video signal from the PC to the headunit.

Touch control of the PC is another matter.
Is it possible to get your headunit touchscreen controlling the PC? Yes.
Is it practical? Not for most of us.

In order to get the touchscreen functionality from your existing headunit to the PC, you have two basic options:
    1. Add an aftermarket touchkit over top of the headunit screen. Mind you, this will reduce the brightness somewhat and you'll lose touch control of the headunit itself.

    2. Hack the headunit to convert the headunit's touchscreen to a USB connection via reverse engineering. You may also need custom-written drivers.
Someone did this with a Kenwood unit, I believe and posted a write-up here. It was a long time ago, and I don't know how much of the information would still be valid today.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.
