Faster Boot Speed
I am a c/c++ developer so I am pretty savy with msconfig, disabling unnecessary services, startup processes and disabling page file etc...
I currently have windows embedded 7 running on a atom processor with 4 gig of ram and intel ssd. The speed is ok but I want the computer to boot faster.
I plan on switching to windows 8.1 with most of the processes disabled but I will need to run directx and a small sqlite db in the background. The software I wrote requires these.
I want to replace to make the hardware faster. Does anyone know how to speed up bios post? or have recommendations for 'near instant on'?

I think you will need a better board and cpu combo. You should read mickz's thread on the z77n-wifi mainboard and boot times, I think the fastest is around 12-15 secs boot. Good luck SNO
That's the Holy Grail of carPC's. I dumped my Atom based MOBO and got a Jetway industrial socket G2 board because it has BIOS tweeks for fast boot. It lets you boot into windows before initializing all the USB ports, uPCIe, and other resources, skip some POST stuff, and a host of other settings way over my head, but I have not yet explored all the options. I am currently still at 30 seconds from powerup until music is playing in the Driveline front end software with windows 7. I think I had it at about 15 seconds for a couple weeks, but I changed to a trackball keyboard that has a 2 port USB hub, and it cause a B2 POST lockup which reset my BIOS back to the long boot.
My Asus win8 notebook is in windows in 3-4 seconds from power button, then over the next 30 seconds is still loading stuff in the tray, but i replaced the hard drive with an SSD, and had to duplicate several tiny partitions to get it to work properly. I suspect those partitions have some quick boot tricks involved with them.
I just bought a sony tap that boots in 13.5 seconds. I also recently rode in a ford edge that had a REALLY quick < 2 second boot time (to make things fair this was done via windows embedded automotive)
My current setup boots faster then 15 seconds. I know there is a way to make this thing fly, I just need to find the right combination.
I am on my second build (1st build is atom based) and this time I wanted to change a few things...new/latest MD, SSD, more MEM. So, I went with the Gigabyte H87n-wifi (z87n overkill for me), Pent G3320, 2Gb Mem, Sandisk 64GB SSD using Win 7 32bit. My boot time now is about 12-15 seconds. Right now, I don't see my bios logo and can't even get back into bios due to changing some bios settings and one being "Ultrafast". I see the Windows logo come up briefly then into "Welcome to windows". It stays at this point the longest of my boot process. So, this MB has a few bios changes to speed things up. Also, you can change a few Windows (Group Policy) settings. All of your hardware does make a difference though.
i got a problem too with my boot times as the fuzzy does a mem check and i have 4g on the mobo. i think i got the faster shutdown time on the other hand. anyway if someone has any tip for disabling this annoyin test i would be very glad to hear..
You can't disable the memory test completely. It's part of POST (Power On Self Test).

Most BIOSes have an option for a "Fast Boot" or something similar. One thing the fast boot option does (on most motherboards, anyway) is reduce the number of passes for the memory check, usually from 3-4 passes to one, IIRC.
havent notice anything in my mobo but i ll check it again tonight. if not i will reduce the amount of memory .

CPU speed directly influences SSD speed in that aspect. An Atom will be far too slow.
I would suggest a Haswell i3 or i5 with an Asrock board. In the UEFI you can switch on Ultra Fast Boot, which needs Intel Rapid Start installed. The UEFI wont show a post screen at all then and almost instantly will load the OS after you switch the mainboard on. Installing IRS is a bit of an effort (need a small extra partition the size of your RAM and configure it properly), but after it works, its very fast. Windows 8.1 wont make much of a difference with such components, IRS and a fast SSD. Best I ever saw was 2 secs less than Windows 7.
I never measured it, but from memory I would guess around 5 second boot time is no problem with a proper system and configuration. The times of 12 second boots are long over. However, youre still better off with using sleep. It doesnt have the problems hibernation has, and is even faster then the fastest cold boot, plus you wont lose any data and can resume directly where you left off.
