Nexus 7 (2013) Car install, having lackluster audio with a FiiO E7 for the DAC

Recently installed a Nexus 7 2013 into my Altima and everything is working pretty much spot on... except the audio. Before the tablet I had a Kenwood DDX418 which had it's own amp/EQ and the audio sounded much, much better than my current setup. Which minus the EQ, should be better on paper. Setup is as follows:

    Nexus 7 2013 > OTG Cable > FiiO E7 USB DAC > Alpine 300W Amplifer > Speakers

The audio clarity is there and actually really good with Viper, but the bass is absolutely abysmal. On my previous setup the bass was actually pretty good considering I was lacking a subwoofer. But now it feels really muted and really doesn't have the same depth it had before. Is my DAC of choice not very good? I've been thinking about picking up an equalizer but if the DAC is muting the audio, can the EQ really remedy that? Pretty new to the audio world and I've for the most part figured out my way thus far, but this has me stumped. I was thinking about picking up this EQ in hopes to restore my audio and more specifically the bass to what it was.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
