    Unhappy Need help..Audio Buzz

Hey all. I need some advice. I've built a mini-itx computer under the passenger seat of my Xterra. Everything works great except for a high-end buzz/whine while playing MP3s. First, let me describe the hardware, then the hookup.

    Hardware:
    Via mini-itx C3 800mhz board
70w PSU (DC, plugged into cigarette lighter)
Xenarc touch screen VGA monitor mounted on dash

The computer uses a DC power supply, as does the monitor (making it removable to prevent unwanted "borrowing").

The sound is transferred to the factory stereo from the headphone jack to an RCA splitter, through an FM modulator and in through the antenna.
I was getting good signal strength but an annoying whine with this setup, so I added a ground loop isololator thingy. This suppressed some of the noise, but the signal sucks now.

What should I do? Oh, I built the computer itself in a small cardboard box, it's grounded with a wire running down to the body of the car.

any suggestions on where this sound could be coming from? It tends to rise and fall with the tachometer, by the way.

The whine in amplifier is caused by running the rca input along side the power line. Using good shielded cables and running the cables on opposite sides of the car usually alleviates the problem.

This may be applicable to fm modulators.

First problem: 70watt PSU connected to the cig lighter line. Connect it directly to the battery. This is the worst spot for power.
Second problem: RCA splitter, if it is low quality you will get noise.
Third Problem: You grounded the pc with a wire that RUNS the body of the car? I understand this like if you were using a LONG GROUND wire. Keep grounds as short as posible.

Onboard sound? These are prone to problems. Some more notisable than others.

    Good luck resolving your problem.

Ok. I'm not too smart 'bout electrical stuff. Can anyone give me a simple idiot's guide to connecting directly to the battery? I have some wire for it, and an in-line fuse thingy, I just need to know where to hook into the 'lectricity.

tap straight off your car battey

battery + ~~> fuse (close as possible to the battery) ~~~> .. run the wire all the way to your power supply.

I typically like to use an inline relay, but thats just me. obviously you should use proper sized terminal rings.
    Mine needs to be updated.

LoL. What's a terminal ring? Where, close to the battery, do I "tap in"?
You forget, I'm a computer geek...I know nothing about cars, electronics, etcetera.

With the inline fuse, you can place it about 18-24 inches from the battery. It should go like this, from the battery terminal, you will have 18-24 inches of wire then the inline fuse, then you take the wire to where every you want.
