    Angry Disaster day

What I thought was the PC restarting in safe mode, so the Matrox TVout wasn't working.

    Bought a mini scan converter.
Fitted it, fired up the PC. Not image, but there is signal.
    CPU fan spins up.
    PSU spins up.
    Motherboard chip fan spins up.
    Motherboard bios beeper beeps
    No HDD activety.
No line hiss from the FM modulator, just the station that it should be masking, with interference, unplug it's power and and the station goes back to full strength, so it is getting no line in from the onboard sound, just power.

In an emergency stop, the ATX psu had shifted on it's screw mounting, and ripped itself loose from the velro that held it against the case . The other screw mounting (that couldn't be fastened down because the motherboard tray was in the way, had swung round and contacted the board on a solderpoint. Looks like the board has shorted against the PSU. Version one Duron box had bit the dust, I now have a useless USB GPS, USB2 DVD Drive, a useless infra red Ira and Epilot remote, a Duron, a HDD, a Silent Heatpipe, and a 250Watt ATX PSU.

God I'm so annoyed.I was just planning to try and update the screen from a cheap composite to either a Vibrant 10.4" or a datalux 10.4" that I had found on ebay. Now that can go out the window, because I don't have a PC to hook it upto, or much money to do a serious rebuild.

Damn. God I really need to calm down.

!!!!! Man, that sucks. I hope the damage isn't too bad and it's fixable.

So did it actually kill everyone connected as well? Or are they just useless as the comptuer is dead.. If everything fried that REALLY sucks.

Sorry to hear that.. I had a couple hardware failures (as I'm sure most people have) and it really sucks..

Everyone: Thanks. Really needed to rant.
Callahan: Don't know. There is still power to the Wi-Fi Card and adaptor.
Sound was onboardAll the USB stuff should be fine because it is external.

I'm hoping the CPU and Ram will be cool, but of course I need to buy a new Motherboard to test that, and had planned to go Epia, or ZPC for the next version, and recycle that Mobo/CPU into my PC (was hoping I would be happy with a Duron 1.3 and huge MDF case for next 6months to a year, then build the next one smaller with a Epia board, slower, but more compact, and I doubt I use all the performance anyway). I guess I will have to buy the replacement CarPC, but keep using my BP6 system for now. Been a good old soldier that motherboard.

Could you have blown a fuse on the MOBO or power supply (they are little yello SMD on the MOBO.

I shorted out the 5v line on my indash machine...tested the fuses, replace one...has worked fine for a year now.

Worth looking at. I'm going to pull the PC out, and see what gives. If it can be revived, I'm going to use it in my own in house PC (retire the BP6 to a project Linux/Beos dual boot system).

I've already order the Nemiah to replace it, with a one U Mini ATX type PSU (sticking with the inverter for now, but should be able to replace it with an Opus later).

Update. Not a total disaster. Brought the box into the house, hooked up power monitor and keyboard. I can now see the boot screen (on composite through a Matrox G450 you don't see anything till windows loads).

Restoring from hibernation is screwed thanks to the stall when I had to emergency stop for a muppet oulling out on me. Rebooting, and continuing to a normal full bootup works fine.

Will have to disable Hibernation, delete the corrupted hiberfil file, and re-enable hibernation, and everything should be OK.

Guess I paniced when I saw the PSU touching the motherboard traces, and got lucky that it didn't short.

That board and the Duron will become my new desktop machine now, as I've ordered a Nemiah epia, and the BP6 will be going into a home server cube project (wood and Ali) that I built about 1-1.5 years ago. Linux will rule on that box.

once the Nemiah appears (hopefully tomorrow at work address), I can house it in a small Ali box, and mount it behind the side carpet in the trunk out of site.

BTW, what happens with an XP box, if you swap out a motherboard. Does the system just completley die like an NT or 2k system, or does it automatically rebuild the system for you.

Glad to hear there wasn't any hardware loss.

As for XP.. It's iffy.. I've had successes and failures doing this. The best solution is always to reinstall just to start fresh. I would back everything up as you would do for a reisntall anyway, and then give it a shot. If it borks the install you are already to go for a fresh install anyway, if not you saved a little time.

I think it is mainly apps on the C drive where the OS is anyway as that is one of the two 8 gig drives. Don't get room for much more.

After U've done that, next step is to add the 30 gig onto one of the raid ports on the new board, and use mount that with some drive extension plates, or even through an external caddy.
