    Help with Single-DIN design!

Hello people, I am working on a design for a single DIN car/computer for my car (obviously ). This would be my first mini-itx project so I have some questions for you experienced people. Is it possible to fit a EPIA M9000 motherboard with an 2.5inch hard disk/drive and Slimline laptop DVD drive and an PSU (is there such a small thing?) together with a PCI TV/FM tuner card? If not do I have more luck tossing the PCI TV/FM card for an external USB one?

What I basically want is to have the DVD drive in my dash! I can use an external USB DVD drive or an USB2-to-IDE converter and have the DVD drive in the dash and the rest in another case hidden somewhere. But that wouldnt be perfect.

Do you have any designs or suggestions of how I could manage a single-DIN design that will have TV/FM reception, HDD, DVD? Is something like this feasable? Like the xenarc carpc for example?

    Thanx in advance.

P.S. I have searched and read most posts of this forum but did not find my answers. If I have missed something please forgive me.

I don't think you'll get everything in a single DIN slot. Maybe the MB, the PS (like a PW-70), and the 2.5 harddrive. Or like you said, keep the DVD in the dash and put the rest somewhere else.

That's what I'm doing. In fact, my 7" LCD will be in my double DIN slot. Then right above that I have a pop-out cup holder that I'll replace with the external DVD drive. The case will go under the passenger seat.

    Good luck.

Thanx for you swift reply. If I keep the DVD in the dash and the rest hidden will the PCI tv tuner card fit in a 1-DIN design....or do I have to use an USB one afterall?

And another question.....since I will probably only have the DVD in-dash...isnt it better to go for an Opus PSU instead of a PW-70, and use a regular HDD and DVD? Since the 1-DIN will be only for the DVD wouldnt it be more cheaper to use regular size hardware rather than laptop sized?

If you're going with the DVD in-dash and everything else hidden somewhere else, then yes, you could go with the Opus. Likewise you could use either PCI or USB for the TV/FM since the single DIN space is no longer a restriction. Then it will depend on the case you're going to use. I'm not going to have TV so I got one of those D-Link USB FM tuners, so that I can position it next to my antenna hookup.

BTW, the maker of the PW-70 (Ituner) is going to have available soon a shutdown controller for their PS called the ITPS. I'm hoping the combination will be much cheaper than the Opus.

The ITX and hdd and p.s. will fit in a 1U (1.75") using 1/8" standoffs so you have barely 1/4" left over at the top which is slightly less than the height of the slim cd-rom drive. I have an aluminum bracket laying right on top of the Dimm in mine and the top of the case touches that so there is not a lot of free space.

Thanx.....I am going with the In-Dash design without the TV TUNER card. I think that http://www.cobaltcarpc.com/ uses this/or a similar design (or maybe not). I am going to use an USB TV card and hope that the PW-70, MB, HDD and DVD (this is going to be a tough one) will fit into a single-DIN. If not I can always try a different design.
