plastic is just fine
I was thinking about getting this case:

The only thing that worries me is that I can not tell if it is metal or plastic. I figured a metal case would be better in a car due to electrical shielding.

i used the CK-1010-1A for my first carputer. This case is great. Expecpt that it only supports low-profile pci cards. And make sure your cd-rom or dvd doesn't have 2 puttons on the front, only one. Because the eject button on the case will cove both buttons on the cd-rom. I got it off ebay for $240 w/ a 1ghz via mobo.
edit
It's also metal in the inside like an xbox.
Manaing the cables takes a while, and the HD is hard to fit. But it comes with all thumbscrews.
Also when you boot it might say you have a bad cable for the ide, but thats just a bug and will still boot from te HD normally
