Using cd changer controls to control carputer

Is it possible to let my Tuner recognise the carputer as a CD changer and let it control for example winamp. (skip track etc) I think the tuner needs to recognise a cd changer in order to let the functions work at all.

    simple answer - yes

    complex answer -

It totally depend on your head unit, Theoretically any head unit with a stacker connection should be able to control your pc. However, each head unit speaks a different language (protocol).

There has been a fair bit of development with the sony protocol and there is infact a working source and circuit. look up gn unilink

There is a bit of development with the blaupunkt units in the VW, however it tends to be a little "simple".

Good headunit brands like Pioneer, kenwwod, alpine have been looked into but unfortunatly nobody has really pushed on whith it and has ditched the projekt half way. I was a bit dishartend.

There is a company that have cracked the pioneer IP-Bus, they make prefab mp3 player "NEO CAR JUKEBOX", they have a little adapter, but i don't know what language it speaks. It would be good to get a hold of but its $99 and its not garanteed to work with a pc. =[

I gave up looking and decided that it is going to be better to do away with my headunit all together and go for a carputer only solution.

look through OLD POSTS and google for more info.

Im supprised no one mentioned the PhatBox. This thing started as a pipie dream back in 2000 and it actually came to market. I never hear any reviews about it, so I doubt the unit is going to be around long. Anyway...

Check out http://www.phatnoise.com/ The phatbox acts as a changer and can speak to most head units. I know its not an answer to your question, but it is proof that *SOMEONE* knows the protocol behind all the head units.
