convert ide to sata. Will it work for cd/dvd's?

Ok. my current project is to make a 1u rackmount carputer. my other goals are to have a raid 0 system on two WesternD 10k rpm HD's (completed). And computer free of ide cables.

Anyways i've come across a few ide to sata converters. from newegg.com . I plan to use it for my 16x dvd-rom. Now i no longer have an OS on my carputer, so when i boot from cd (actually it'll be 'SATA1') will it read my SATA-DVD-ROM as an optical drive so i can install windows 2000? Or will i have to use ide cables (which means going out and buying 2 cables and a backplane).

The main purpose for only SATA in a 1u rackmount is for suffiecient airflow (and being unique).

It's not a simple pin-matching cable, it's a fully active converter. Building your own would cost more than just buying one.
