    Why a remote?

I was considering buying a remote and hooking up an IR interphase but why do people need a remote for their car pc? You can control everything from your touchscreen, whats the need for the remote? Is it really a useful option?

At first I only had a touchscreen, but then I happened to hook up my Creative CIMR (credit card sized) remote, and found it MUCH MUCH easier to use for things such as navigating songs etc.. I honestly hardly ever use my touchscreen except when I am trying to impress people

Does it need an IR sensor to work or does it work some other way? I wouldn't mind one of those small remotes and its also a plus if I don't need to drill a hole for an IR sensor. Which do you have?

thats what people do they buy the remotes since the touchscreens cost 3x+ more. Honestly nothing beats a touchscreen.

Both have their advantages. Touch screen is super cool b/c its a new and neat technology. By new I mean commercially available with in the last 15 years. Problem is in order to touch the screen you have to reach for the dash, same as the radios without a remote (factory decks). Back in the days when remotes first came out for TVs it was a big deal. Now people don't have to get off their couches to change the channels or volumes or turn on/off the TV. I remember 12 years ago when remotes first came out for high end head units people laughed at the idea of having a remote control for a car stereo. People thought, damn you're so lazy that you wont even reach for the radio buttons that you gotta get a remote for it? Over the years consumers realized having a remote is more convenient and safer to use than to reach for the radio knobs and buttons. Auto makers incorporated radio and AC controls on the steering wheels as oppose to having a wireless remote b/c people will likely to lose the remote. Having a remote for carPC gives you the same convenience as the remotes for your car stereos and TVs. If you're still not convinced, try this. Open up WinAMP and have it play MP3 songs and minimize it. Now open up your GPS nav or OBD-II programs. Having a remote allows you to change songs while your PC displays GPS nav or OBD-II engine status. If you can afford to have both, get them both. That's the way to go if you want an ultimate carPC.

I like a remote over a touchscreen. I have it memorized so I only have to look at the screen if i'm scrolling through a playlist. I've navigated to a DVD to playing mp3s in rush hour traffic without taking my eyes off the road. thats just my two cents.. most people like a touch screen though

And to answer the rest of the question...you can use IR or RF remotes...what ever you got available...

    Look here...

    www.girder.nl

BTW I had a touch screen, but found it way to hard and dangerous to use it while driving...so it was useless. I used a keyboard for a while (with big rubber bumpers on the keys I used most often)

Now I have an RF remote (ATI remote wonder). That remote plus the Girder software DOES EVERYTHING. More useful and powerful than the touchscreen.
