My Setup + Questions (comment please)

Alrighty. I figured I should post my hardware setup here to see if I have everything going correctly.
Here is what I have so far for my Car PC:

2000 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Edition
    EPIA M10000 Motherboard
    40 GB Laptop hard drive
    512MB RAM
120 Watt EPIA Power Supply (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=3670 is what I have)
    80mm Fan

    Here is what I need:
    Slot load DVD ROM drive
    LCD Touchscreen (under 8")
A case (its on it's way)

What I think I need but I'm not sure:
    A new head unit
    An amp
    A remote control
    lots of extension cables
    An inverter

Ok so here are my two main concerns: the power supply and the audio system. First the PSU. I bought this small board on ebay. I wanted it because its fanless and compact. The unit comes with a lighter adaptor and I think that is the only way you can power this PSU. I've tried with an AC/DC adaptor but my connector may have been the wrong one. Anyway I haven't tested this in my car yet but I will try once I can assemble my case. The lighter adaptor has the on/off switch on it which could be a good or bad thing but ill worry about it later. The bottom line: ill I need an inverter to use this PSU? Next is audio. I am a newbie when it comes to car audio. The car I own is my first and I have not even thought about touching the sound system. I want my car computer to be able to do the following:

    MP3 Player
    Radio
    Cd Player
Interphase with my Ipod (I have the firewire connector needed)
    GPS
    Wireless Internet
    Interphase with my cell phone
Track car mileage and gas consumption and other car functions
    Watch DVDs
And anything else that would fall under the general category of a car pc.

For much of this to happen I need to hook my PC to my car's speakers and I have no clue where to begin. I have searched the forums and I see that many people buy a new head unit and an amp for their cars. I am not intrested in havinga "banging" sound system but I want the quality to be good (I don't care if my bass can create earthquakes or not). I find my car's audio is good as it is with my Ipod and a tape adaptor but like anything it could use improvement. Anyhow I was wondering if Ill need to buy a HU and amp for this project to work. I will be using the EPIA's onboard sound because a wireless card will be taking up the PCI slot. What kind of cabling do I need to run from the back of my PC to the car stereo to get my mp3s to play. Does it require me messing around with the car's speakers and such or is there a general input plug from the car's stock HU? Would you recommend me getting a new HU for this project and also what will an amp do for me? Links to any equipment would be excellent and thanks for wading through this long post to help me. I will keep everyone updated on my project.

I'll answer some of your questions and make some comments. Don't use the EPIA onboard audio - it's crap. Get a good sound card like Audigy and replace the wireless network card with a USB. You can better position the wireless antenna if your case is hidden. Or go with the USB Extigy - that has some nice control knobs on it.

You connect the sound from the EPIA (card or onboard) with some 1/8 inch adapters and shielded RCA cables.

Why not an eq and a four channel amplifier (20 or 25W x 4). I route audio from my computer in the trunk to the input of my Clarion PEQ460 eq (bought on ebay for $40) The eq has separate main and sub volume controls as well as fader, low/mid/high, crossover freq etc. The eq also has an auxillary input and a switch for adding another audio source. If you shop around you can probably find a good four channel amp for ~ $100

To be honest I know nothing about car audio. How do I go about hooking this amp and eq up to my HU?

If you use an eq and an amp you don't even need a headunit. All the input and output signals for the eq are RCA, the input to the amps will also be RCA. You just have to route you 8 speaker wires to the amp.

How the heck do I route the wires though? If I understand correctly I need to run the radio's input plug to the eq or amp which would be in the trunk. I'm not sure I even need the amp or eq. Do people just use them because of the outputs and not just because they want better sound?
