Try it with a 10" IDE cable and see if it works...
I got a slim slot DVD drive, the SR-8186. I just got my adapter soldered and made a 10' IDE cable with a 50 pin connector. Windows recognizes the drive, takes a CD, but then spits it back out after 4 or 5 seconds. Is the drive bad? It's still under the 30 day warranty, should I send it back?

I thought about doin that, but if it reads the drive then that shouldnt matter should it?
where did you get this drive?
Okay, I have had that problem before, it doesn't recognize the cd format and thus spits it out. I had a dvd drive do that to my dual layer dvds. It didn't understand the technology and spat it out. Get rid of your drive.
So what kind of cd are you trying?
Mine will take anything EXCEPT DVD+R and +/-RW...and it has to be written on...no blanks.
Stick an audio CD in.
Stick a regular DVD movie in.
Oh yea...test it with a normal 3' cable first, then see if the pins on your cable are screwey (shouldn't make a difference really)
you guys think this drive is the same one?
everywhere else I see it its like $150

I'M DEBT FREE!!
I bought the drive from a mac place on ebay. They are the only ones that sell them on ebay. They always put up a 8184 and a sr-8186 up for auction and only one at a time. I emailed them to see if I could send it back, but they emailed me back asking me what I was putting it in. I didn't want to tell them that I was putting it in a pc.
I have the SR-8186-B. When XP starts it says new hardware found. Has the name SR-8186 on it, but it just spits CD back out. I tried a burned disc and a driver CD that came with my motherboard. I'll try it with a shorter cable and see what happens.
Tell them macs suck and that it don't work and you want your money back.
slot load dvd roms is what im hunting for as well. But i am restrained by the 3 foot ide limitation. Since my carputer will most likely be under the passanger seat, i want an easy way to access the optical drive. Solution, find an slot load firewire dvd-rom, or buy a cheap dvd-rom and use a firewire enclosure. Or if you rather have a more difficult solution may i point you to:
