I bet most of us have a favorite drive. Mine is Maxtor, never any trouble. Others will say different.

Back from the dead one year later....

I live in New England (some cold winters) and need help picking out a drive. I am trying to avoid any 12V components in the system. I would prefer a laptop hard drive but want to avoid the fluid drive bearing problems in extreme cold.

Despite spending many hours on the boards and checking manufacturer's spec sheets, I can NOT find a single laptop hard drive that doesn't have FDBs.

    1) Is anyone using a laptop hard drive without fluid drive bearings? If so, what is the model number?
    2) If I go with a USB 2.0 external hard drive, will it use 5V (by virtue of using USB power) or is it possible it will still use 12V? Also, if anyone is using an external drive that has served them well, please list the model number.

    Thanks! Jim

If anyone was interested in some extreme moding, I found THIS while looking for a cold weather solution. It could be combined with a small heating element of some type to maintain above spec temps. Here are a few heater elements. One on that page can attach to a LCD to keep it warm.
Today I stuffed some dolls full of dead rats I put in the blender. I'm wondering if maybe, there really is something wrong with me.

I live in Colorado, I really haven't had any problems with my drive, laptop 40GB drive, usually I'll have the car warmed up before I start up the system. however it will start just fine in 20-30deg weather. The touchscreen is little slow to react sometimes, no big deal.

You can buy a lot of storage in a desktop unit for that much.

I guess the test of cold weather will come soon enough, I remember it being below 0 in the springs a couple of times last year.

Denver is similar for temps, Several days have been that cold. My HD did just fine, A little bearing noise until the temp came up. It hit boot RPMs every time.
