I got the 9236. I have tried it on my laptop and it didn't work well with the bus powered cable but fine with the included wall jack. On the Carputer using the add-on USB 2.0 card it works great even with an extention cable. No issues at all. Plus it's always cool to have a CD-R in the car too for when a friend likes the music you're listening to and you can offer to burn it for them.

I just say your pushing it with the whole bus power thing .... I dont remember the spec, but I think USB is rated at 500 mA. I know they designed the drive for it and all, but still, my drive pulls 1.5 at spinup.

I use the coolmax 63.99 enclosure. It takes a 12v in. I have run it straight off my car, and off my opus - it worked fine with both.

according to your site, you use a full-sized slot loading DVD. THat thing is gonna take a whole lot more power than the slim ones

i'm checking out that case for 63.99 too. if it uses 12 v in does it also make the 3 v for the dvd drive too? that seems to be my main concern. looks like just what i need to put the dvd in the dash

Dude, I hope you're not planning to do DVD playback with Win98se and a USB attached drive! As far as I know, Win98se doesn't support the higher USB 2.0 transfer rates (480Mb) it only does the older 1.1 (10Mb or was it 11Mb?).

my only other os option is me. will that work with usb 2.0?

i don't really care for me though...

I just bought this external USB drive enclosure. It was only $29.50 for the retail package, and shipped free within the US. It's 12v and has an external power wart. So I should be able to hook this up right to the car with a fuse.

I tested the unit as soon as I got home, and it works great with my EPIA M10k. I watched Pirates of the Carribean flawlessly with it. I came with all the connectors and cables you need, and a worthless driver disk. The drivers are included with Win2000 or later.

I do want to check it out and see if I put an IDE cable in it with connectors for 2 drives and see if it will do a master and a slave.
