    Help It's smoking!!

    Help please,

    I've had a bit of a problem my SBC, It started smoking!

    I think I have found the problem, but I cannot identify the part.

    Think it is a: Tantalum Ultra Low ESR Capacitor
    But do not know what I should order.

    can anyone tell me what the part is? And where to get a replacement.
    I would think the burnt-out part is the same as he one below?

    I'm going to replace the part and hope that was all that went pop!

    Thanks

    You dont have to buy a surface mount capacitor...just quickly buy a standard tantalum from maplin and solder the legs directly to the pads...watch the polarity though. Im just trying to save you from hunting those hard to find parts.

    Youll find that thereres other damaged components which causes the tantalum to blow at the first place. Infact just unsolder it first and see what happen...it may power up without it but unreliably.

    Farnell should stock them

    Good luck

    Thanks Ricky327,

    But, what is the part?

    What value of cap should I use?

    It was a faulty power connector that caused the problem.

    Ta.

    106 = 10 + 6 zero's (values in picofarad)

    Electrolytic/tantatum are normally quoted in uF.

    106 = 10uF, the E is the voltage rating = 16V.

    Assuming those caps are the same...LOL

    So you are looking for 10uF 16V SMD capacitor.

    Check this out anyway for more info, right at the bottom :

    http://library.solarbotics.net/piece..._cap_code.html

    Farnell :

    http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search/sea...0000~017009000

    Before you order it look at some old PC parts, you find them in there as they are fairly common value.

    That's what I'm looking for.

    Yes I could use a non SMT version for now. it's right at the edge of the board. Could bend the legs around the edge of the board, If it works I'm very happy.

    Big Thanks.

    You are welcome.

    The polarity marking on the tantalum can be confusing, just to remind you as I blew one up a week ago. I thought the big bar was the negative...I didnt pay attention to the small + sign

    I would worry as to WHY that capacitor died to begin with...are you running bad power?...too much juice? a short?

    He said :

    Sound nasty as it pops the capacitor...I would have cried as Ill expect more damages...oh well lets not worry him
