I got started because I wanted to have a GPS system in my car. One of my friends had built an MP3car, and I decided I'd make my own verson. It started with a laptop sitting in the passenger seat of my car, and Copilot 2003. After a while I figured out how to hook it up to my stereo system of my car. Now I had music and GPS from the passenger seat of my car.

Needless to say this was a dangerous situation. I had to look down and over to see the map or control the music. So I went out and got a Griffin Powermate and programmed it with girder to controll winamp. Now I only had to look over to see Copilot. Better, but not good enough. I went out and got a DScustoms touchscreen and duct taped it to the dashboard of my car (yes. I used duct tape for a few months.)

At this point I was powering my laptop, The touchscreen and a USB hub all from my cigarett lighter in the ugliest mess of wires you've ever seen in your life. I finaly got my local mechanics to help me tear the clock out, now and I've properly mounted the screen on my dash, running the wires behind the clock and under the dash.

I got a belkin 4 port serial converter and a Garmin GPS 35. This allowed me to make my USB hub unpowered, solving a bunch of lockup problems. Finaly I ran power lines to all my equipment and hid all the wires under the center console, dash, and passenger seat. The laptop now sits in the map pocket behind the passengers seat. Thats my current setup and how I got started. I hope this helps you. I've included a wiring diagram as well. You can see some images of my setup.

To me, MP3Cars are about doing something cool and doing it all by yourself. The creation of something that's one of a kind.

Porn on a 15" TFT really screws with your competitions reaction time when racing. It's good for a 2~3 sec jump
What got me started was Gutters site which I found via www.mp3.com.
It started as a music box (killer cd changer) with aspirations of becoming larger/smaller which it has.

    Conclusion...

In the future even your stripper yugo will come with a GPS/MP3/DVD system in it. Just like the FM stero and CD player and how they slowly trickled their way down to the mainstream so will the in car computer system.

We probably will never know who the first guy was that put a computer in a car. (If it was back in the sixties it was probably a mainframe in the pickup bed of a truck with a really long extension cord.) End of the story it is always the curious that makes this stuff happen, the rest of society just gets to benefit from their mistakes.

My 2 cents... and don't start bagging on my english. I'm an engineering major and I'm done with writing english papers. It's all about the equations now...
