    Post PSU Explosion

I was trying to add more current capability to the 12v line of my power supply (homebuilt based on the 7812 regulator for twelve volt line I thought 1A would do it...but it was just a little shy) and in my upgrade i must have crossed a solder joint....but it sizzled then crackled then fianlly literally blew up. I freid two voltage regulators and literally blew up the 7812 and a capacitor....very interesting but highly disapointing.....

PS don't know exactly why i posted...just thought I'd share....

    Cool

Sounds cool. I blew up a .002uF 25KV capacitor in a Tesla Coil once. Even though it was incased, it sounded like a bomb going off and put a huge dent in the side of the case. There was glass, oil and foil everywhere.

    Exclamation

Near my house last summer, one of them grey streetpole high-voltage things blew up during an electrical storm... That was pretty spectacular! I don't know if it was the lightening or the thing blowing up, but the sound was defening even a block away.

Didn't much like the 24 hours without power afterwards, though... I guess that's what inverters in your car are for, eh?!?!

I've seen that. An internal short forms and starts to boil the oil. For one reason or another, the safety valve doesn't open and BOOM! Very cool.
