    Radar Detector Interface

Has anyone tried interfacing their radar detector with their Car PC? I always hated the crappy sound quality of my Radar Detector, plus the fact that I can't hear it when the music is up.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could create your own sounds and have them play through your stereo and maybe a cool on screen display??? Has anyone done this or tried to do this. It seems like you would have to do is run a wire from the speaker output or something like that to a serial port. Then if the serial port detects a signal it would know that you hit radar. You probably couldn't detect the radar type or intensity without building something complex.

Does anyone think there is a way to do this? Are there any "laptop radar detectors" on the market? I doubt it, but there should be...especially as CarPCs become more popular.

In case anyone is interested, I just did a little research. The high end Escort 8500 Radar Detector supposedly has audio out. At $300 the thing costs as much as many of our carPCs

Anyway, this thing may be perfect for interfacing a radar detector.

If you mean that Escort 8500, here is some info http://www.best-radar-detectors.net/..._8500_.html?cm

You can find more on other sites by searching google. Audio out is basically all I'm looking for. Anything else would be really cool, but an audio out is a great start. I still wish there was a radar detector built for PC..like USB or something..I'm sure there will be one day.

8500 is loud enough (usually) without external speaker. It's WAY louder than normal detectors.
