Wondering how long I can run this machine in my car on battery in standby mode (Suspend to RAM)
Sometimes I don't start my car for 3-5 days when I don't have class (like now because of vacation)
I work from my home so not much work travel
Would this work or is it just safer to do a full shutdown?
I really like STR though, really fast. Boots back up in 5 seconds

1.get an ammeter.
2.check to see how much your system draws in STR
3.divide the number from (2) by the ampHour rating on you battery and you will get the number of hours before your battery will be completely depleted starting with a full charge.
but, of course, you need to know how many aH you need to start...

would there be anyway to setup something that automatically shutdown the computer after 2-3 days of not coming out of standby?
that would be pretty awesome and solve the problem

your carputer will be shut down at least if your carbattery is going under 7V!
i can't say if your car will be able to start with only 7V of current.. but i'm sure it isn't that good for your battery!
this is the reason why i'm using a laptop instead of a "normal" pc, because it can run at least more than an hour and synchronize sound & moviez over wlan until it wents automaticly into hibernate mode! without using current from carbattery!!
always use HIBERNATE mode if you're leaving your car several days without starting.. it consumes much less current!!

As has been discussed here many times before, an ATX power supply will continue to draw a small amount of current even if the computer is shut down completely. In fact, the difference between the current drawn in STR mode and completely shut down is often negligible.
My system (EPIA V) draws about 140mA in STR and 100mA when shut down. I suppose that either of these could drain your battery after a few days, but unless you are planning to completely disconnect the power from your computer when it is shut down, you might as well just leave it in suspend mode all the time.
