    WD Hardrive problem?

    I just got my WD 120GB harddrive yesterday... loaded XP Pro onto it and it worked great. Today, I tried booting up my M10k and the harddrive is making a noise like a cd player that can't find the beginning of a track and it won't boot up or anything. Is there a problem with the harddrive or do you think it might be the ribbon cable? Do you guys think I need to return it?

    I had the same issue with using the stock power supply with my cheapo castronic case. As soon as I pumped up the voltage, its all good. It is definately just power related by the description.

    Download and run this ::This::

    It is a program called gwscan written for Gateway from WD. What you need to do is 1 of 2 thing:

    1.) either create a windows 98 boot disc and copy these files over to it and overwrite anything on it. Then reboot and boot to the disc, if it takes you to an A:\> then just type GWSCAN and press enter. When at the main menu just choose the option to Run Extended test. It will give you either a pass a fail or will let you repair the drive.

    2.) Format a 3 floppy in windows xp and choose the option to create MS-DOS boot disc. When the format is done go into the floppy goto Edit -> Select All then hit delete and delete everything. That writes the master boot record to the floppy so its bootable. When done w/ that extract the file that you downloaded to that particular disc and again boot to the disc and run gwscan from the A:\> prompt. If it fails you have a bad drive definately

    HOWEVER DO NOT CHOOSE TO WRITE ZEROS TO THE DRIVE BECAUSE IT WILL DESTROY ALL DATA ON THE HDD AND WRITE A ZERO TO EVERY SECTOR TO THE DRIVE

    If you have any questions feel free to PM me!

    Yes it will... since you need to load it from a floppy disc into memory. trust me on this!!! If you can boot up to a floppy disc then he should be able to run this, as long as the hdd is being recognized in the BIOS. I would hook up floppy and test it out!! As I stated I agree w/ the PSU issue but if you want to test the HDD there are some directions. If he can't get into windows on this sytem thats fine do it from another to ge this done if need be!!!

    imo, it sounds like it's not spinning up on the m10k, if no spin up, no bios detection

    That was my issue...it is not recognised even. Power supply cured mine real fast. to be sure, just plug in a ATX power supply and recheck it. I know it will work
