I had a quantum 30 gig in my car for over a year and had not problems. It still runs well.
Hard drives are built VERY well these days. The only hard drive I've actually broken when was I had a computer laying out in parts (running). I was clumsy and something quite heavy fell off my desk right on it. Started clicking to a slow grinding halt. Bah, it was only a 2 gigger.
Anyway, If you're really paranoid, I hear notebook drives are much more suited for mobile life (for obvious reasons). But that technology has been around for years and has trickled into the desktop hard drives on the market.
Find a hard drive you're interested in and look up the specs at the manafacturer's website. They usually tout the durability of their drives quite a bit. I forget the exact numbers, but my quantum is rated to withstand several Gs of shock while running.
