There you can see the IDE in the trunk, and then my front mounted dvd-rom in my glovebox.

Funny thing... this is one of cars that I got the idea about the labtop cdrw/dvd in the dash. I just didn't check out the cable. Thanks for your help, I will order a cable.

    NP, enjoy...

It's convient to have everything up front to install and do stuff.

I've checked out stonewallcable, but is there a cheaper place? They want $55+ for one.

cant say if this will work (although i do plan on trying it sometime in the near furure), but in other threads i've seen talk of people making them out of cat5 wire. get your 2 connectors, then cut up 5 peices of cat 5 wire (5 cables X 8 strands per cable = 40 wires) and add your own connector at the end.

If you really wanted to do the job right, then you could use 10 lengths of cat5 cable, 80 strands total. make 1 wire in EACH twisted pair a ground wire (read that on the board too).

and of course, make SURE you get each wire lined up right. I would use a meter and buzz out each of the pins to make sure.

Stonewall has them cheaper than that.
I spoke to the engineering department today on the phone.

I assume you're implying me. Heck, what's to assume. I'm the only one here with a post count under ten.

*OFFICIALLY*, the IDE spec says that the longest you are *SUPPOSED* to go is 18" (quick search: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/6/ub...2&m=8210966072. Follow the thread, and there's a link to where the spec sheet is. It's buried, but if you look it's there). To quote "continuum" in that thread..
18" is the maximum overall length. Cables longer usually do work... but if they don't, well then they don't.
Obviously I do stand corrected that it absolutely won't work though, so I won't contest that. Blame it on me having to guarantee to my boss when I build/fix a workstation that it's absolutely going to work, not "maybe" if I don't follow the official specs (corporations can be anal at times, especially when they have to document all their proceedures for a government agency that oversees everything they do ). I do agree with Leslie that you should make sure it's an 80 conductor cable though. The last time I tried something similar was back when 40 conductor cable was the norm, and it didn't work. Obviously things have changed with 80 conductor cables.

At any rate Defiler, I'm not going to feed any fires, but I really take offense to your comment simply because I have been building and fixing computers for the past 14 years. In that time I've built quite a few systems that "shouldn't have worked" too, so I know you can bend the rules (I never seen/heard somebody bending that rule that far though ). If you basing my intellect on my post count, then you're selling me short needlessly. I'm not going to try to impress anybody with my background either, since I'm not here for that, so I'll end it here. Don't take the above as a flame, it's not meant to be one.

..and Leslie. Obviously I must have some belief that you and your carputer exist, or I would be hallucinating that I'm seeing that picture you posted.

    Sinister,

Alot of things in this world seem to be, but aren't.
    That's what make's it interesting.

If everythgin was so predictable, wouldn't life as we know it be boring?

No, if I listened to people like you (not saying you give bad advice or anything), then I wouldn never have had a DVD-ROM up front so easily that can do all the things I want it to do.

Sometime you have to try, or else you won't suceed.

In this case I tried. And you know what I did.

You should try a cable for yourself. It works I tell ya.

Talk about having some Sticky threads, this topic has been brought up about 25 times since I have had a working 15 foot IDE.

This makes me think if people know what searching means. I think people killed all the kittens.
