    That's what make's it interesting.

If everythgin was so predictable, wouldn't life as we know it be boring?

No, if I listened to people like you (not saying you give bad advice or anything), then I wouldn never have had a DVD-ROM up front so easily that can do all the things I want it to do.

Sometime you have to try, or else you won't suceed.

In this case I tried. And you know what I did.

You should try a cable for yourself. It works I tell ya.
Leslie, I'm not doubting you at all that it works. As soon as you mentioned 80 conductor cabling, I went.. "d'oh.. I didn't consider that" I think everybody's gotta admit though: going 180" on a cable that was initially only designed to go 18", at first glance doesn't look like it's going to work. Oh well, I learned something new today.

Come to think about it.. Leslie I may have to owe you a beer sometime. You just gave me an idea.

Give Guiness a shot. I took a quick look and I didn't see anything about the longest IDE cable length in a working computer mounted inside of a car. Who knows? Maybe you'll make it in there, especially when you consider that a car isn't exactly the most electrically quiet environment.

    Cool.

I just came up with that idea when I was all drunk and dumb cause my other hobby is RC planes and people are building a small Tiger Moth foam electric plane and sending it around the world to fly and sign the log book. We are trying to get into the Book.

On another point. Yea yea, just got my new tweeters int he mail, going to install in my rear doors. Peace.

Check out www.cablesandconnectors.com it's around where I live you can buy the ide cable per foot I think it's $1.29 and for another $2.90 you get 2 ide 40 connectors and make your own cable as long as you want, it's not recommended for long lengths due to a lack of shielding(poor insulation) another option is buy a cheap extrenal usd drive enclosure pick the one that is for ide rip the board that is ide to usb and you have a much better solution, I have one of those slim slot drives sr-8186 dvd/cd it's awesome I made it into a head unit with the computer in the glove compartment 4ft cable I made and it works, but I want to change it over to the usb set up just because the wiring will have a cleaner look, ide 40 cable is a pain to route.

I went the route of buying a USB 2.0 to IDE adapter for $38 after shipping. Then I got a USB extension cable. Using a cdr/dvd slot-load slimline drive in mine. ($150 on ebay). I kicked around doing the long IDE thing (only needed about 5 feet, from under seat to dash), but elected to go the USB route. Will post results as soon as I receive my new MB (in a few days). Will post pics too.

question of the day: is there something I'm missing here? besides the obvious cost advantage of going with a long IDE cable vs. a USB2 adapter, what exactly is the advantage of using the IDE cable? I figure i'm already going to have a USB2 hub up there anyway for other purposes, so why not tie the drive into that?

It's cheap (the IDE cable). That's about the only advantage I can think of off the top of my head. One of the things I like most about using a USB2.0 to IDE adapter is that if you are using a 2.5" HD, most likely you won't need to run a separate line for power (at least on my adapter, I can run it without a separate power source). It'll be either powered directly from the host USB port, or from the USB hub if it's plugged into one. Another advantage is that in some cars it's easier to run a USB cable than it is to run an IDE cable (like my car: 2002 Acura RSX-S. Major P.I.T.A. to run cables!).

I choose IDE, cause I can boot from it to install my OS. I donno if my mobo can handle booting to a USB or Firewire device easily.

That is a good point. I plan to use a cheap micro atx board. Sometimes most cheap motherboards don't boot from USB.
