I an going to be HU-less also.

I still want radio preset buttons on my dash. I think I'll be able to work that out by hacking into a keyboard/keypad so that each one of the buttons on my dash presses a keyboard key. Then I can use Girder to assign those keys a task, like change radio station. If you use number pad keys, then they each could have 2 functions by turning numlock on/off.

What type of sound card are you all using to get from the carputer to the amp. Do you all just use a headphone cable with two RCAs on the end to go into the amp and how do you control the treble, bass, and sub woofer. Most high end head units have sub woofer rca outs. I will be using two amps one for my sub and one for my mids.

I have a Pioneer 8500, and I have to say that it's the best way to go for me. I've gone head unitless and I've gone with the head unit... Let me be honest, it's easier and takes up less space to go with out a head unit. However, I was using crappy head units before. This head unit is much better. It has a very good EQ and volume control. Not to mention I use AM for news and traffic. Also, I don't have to completely go through the PC to listen to CDs when sometimes it's just easier to go through the head unit. Most importantly, my unit has Super Tuner III so I get MUCH better FM quality than any other FM I've ever heard. I don't even have an antenna.

One more thing... In my car, the shifter in 3 inches away from my head unit. On the head unit the buttons actually fold out and extend to my fingers on the shifter!!! I NEVER have to move my hand off the shifter. I'd NEVER give that up.

i am going to be head unitless soon...i plan on using the MP3+ soundcard with a 6 channel passive EQ mounted in the glovebox. I am also gonna use a david navone 2 channel line driver before the EQ to boost the stock amp a bit if needs be. I have a sub/amp setup in the trunk, so i will run my cub output from the EQ to the trunk. About the popping on, i plan on putting a switch in line with the remote turn on for the EQ (thus stopping all sound if its switched off). This way, not only do i have the ability to avoid the popping sound, if windows goes crazy or whatever (which we all know it can), i have a quick way to shut off all sound. Also, if i get a phone call, or, more drastically get pulled over, i can shut sound off instantly, without having to deal with software issues. I know this sounds like a pain, but if it gets too bad i could wire in a timed relay and leave the switch on all the time, just using it as a quick disconnect.....as a matter of fact, i think i will do that. Anyone have any suggstions about a relay delay (i am a bit of an electronic newbie).....

thanks for posting this thread leslie, made me think it through!

I'm going headunitless as soon as I get everything installed back in the car. I'm doing some minor tweaking right now. But I have an Audigy 2 ZS going into a Clarion EQS-560 which has a sub, fade, and Vol. control on it as well as a 5 band EQ. It will put out 7V. on the preouts. The highs and lows will go to a Kicker KX600.4 and the sub output will go to a Kicker KX400.1. I'm hoping it will sound great when I'm done.

I'm adding a 12 volt toggle to turn of amps if I have too. Just tapping into the accesory turn on lead.
