    onboard vs external soundcards

I planning on using the optical out of a sound card to feed into my Alpine H700 DSP, the question is there any sound quality difference from having a sound card built-in to the motherboard than one on a PCI slot. I am thinking the digital signal has no barring on sound quality and rely on the H700 to take care of all the sound processing,DAC, etc.

There is a difference in sound between them especially in PC Speakers, but if your head unit is going to be processing the signal I would say that it would be pretty safe to use on board sound
