    Laptop DVD Adaptor

Okay, I am getting a little confused on hooking a Laptop DVD drive to a standard IDE connector on an M10000 Motherboard.

On eBay there is Laptop to IDE adaptor ($1.99 to $9.99) and I thought that was all that was needed.... it converts the data lines and power lines to standard IDE and ATX power connectors...

    Then I see this ...

    CD Adaptor

and it looks a bit more complicated.... and I missing something about the $1.99 ones? Do they only work with Hard Drives and not CD/DVD drives.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts...

The links you guys have posted are the same piece of hardware, just put together by different companies. Either adapter will work perfectly. I purchased the same one from idot.com that Crav has. I used it with a slim DVD drive out of an iMac.

    dug1967,
do you have a pic of the adapter you bought off ebay?

No picture of the one I bought, because I haven't bought one yet.... trying to make sure I get the right kind.....

I was at first thinking all I needed was one like this

    IDE Hard Drive Adaptor

but then I saw the ones like posted above and figured maybe this one is not right....

I am assuming the ones you two speak of (and shown) covers the sound output of the DVD also, which would be important.

Thanks to both for the info.

Frodo is right. The adapter you were initially looking at on ebay is meant for laptop HDDs. It won't have the connections for CD audio. If you look at the other two that were linked to, you can see the audio connection. I'd recommend the one from idotpc.com for your DVD drive.

I wish i would have know about that earlier. I ended up paying 75 bucks for a Slimline CD/DVD USB2.0 Enclosure. I bought it because the computer was going to be more than 32" away from the CD/DVD drive. This way i didn't have to worry about the length of the cable issue but for that price i might have tried at least.

I can't complain though becasue what i bought http://www.bixnet.com/24xpcmcicdro.html was exactly what i needed. I was expecting to get an assembled product (which i was a little bit nervouse about taking the whole thing apart and gutting it for it's circiutry) but when i got it was unassembled and the circuitry was easily removed.

I was so stoked becasue I have some space constraints and i was afraid that it wouldn't fit, but it did and it was the perfect size. I am mounting my CDRW/DVD vertically and my size constraint is in the vertical space. the circuitry was actually two curcuitboards. 1 was just like the one pictured on the first link and the second was connected to the first by a 50 pin cable which aloud me to creat a right angle with the two circuit boards alleviating my size constraints.

With the one I bought from IdotPC, I didn't need to connect anything for sound. The sound worked through the IDE ribbon cable which I thought was weird... but it worked.
