Dolby Digital Signal Processors with SPDIF for cars?

Hi all,

Any opinions on Dolby Digital Surround Sound in the car setting.

I want this for waching DVD's. Any product link suggestions. I have read every post here about Digital Sound Processing.

I have no clue on where to start, what are good product names and, tried and tested products.

I want to hook up the SPDIF out from my EPIA M10000 to the digital sound processor and then to the amps and then to the speakers.

Alpine makes a few good ones that take toslink digital in. The pxa-h510, pxa-h700, pxa-h900 [$$$$$]).

I use the pxa-h510 with a sound blaster extigy. When watching movies the pxa-h510's surround sound processing kicks in-sounds very very very nice (full jl audio setup). They can be had for somewhere around 200-300 bux. The pxa-h700 is much newer and better, however it takes up a whole din, whereas the pxa-h510 is a hideaway unit with a little control display you can run up front.

Do you have any pics (other than what is listed on their website) I am trying to gauge the size of this thing because space is limited. Will it accepts SPDIF from say the EPIA M10000?

phoenix gold is supposed to release a 5.1 amp that has onboard processing and room for a sub, so you get it all in one amp. check out this link

BUT i have looked everywhere else and can't find it for sale anywhere, they don't have it on their website either. i don't know if it's still coming, or if it never really picked up.

For the sound cards that have the SPDIF outs you'd use a TOSLINK/SPDIF cable - same connector, different name.

I thought SPDIF was through typical RCA cable... and TOSLINK was optica??

Pardon my ignorance, but what extra benefit does the pxa-h510 provide in a carputer setup? Can't you split the channels directly from the extigy with mini plug to RCA adaptors into an amp (or 2) and get the same 5.1 effect?

I am not an expert here but having an external procesor saves the EPIA M10000 processor some work by offloading the work to the external processor. When you use the USB2 soundcards it really sucks up your USB2 bandwidth resulting is choppy sound or video. The only other option I see is to get a PCI sound card that supports 5.1 and Dolby, DTS etc.

There also is an added benifit with installs that don't have a head unit to act as a preamp/amp. These units usually have some sort of amp capabilities for each channel.

Correct me if I am wrong.
