Relocating headunit and extending faceplate somewhere else.

i just tried doing a remote faceplate on my car and its not working, i have soldered it 3 seperate times thinking it might have been a bad connection but its not. has anyone figured out what kind of limit there may be on the length? i think my cable might be 6 or 7 feet long.....i basically am leaving the radio sit behind the lcd and running the face up to the headliner.

i did this and it worked fine with that length(mine is longer) be sure to check on the head unit to see where the faceplate connected there. sometimes there is a switch that needs to be pushed down to make the head unit think there is a faceplate there.

yah i pressed the button down. , i have two cat5 couplers hooked to it which im not sure if they could be causing loss in something......i have a pioneer HU. i have done this solder job 2 times and my friend tried once and we cant get it to work argh!

I would just trace the wires, it sounds like you have one backwards or you have solder touching between terminals. Mine is longer than 7 ft and works OK. I did have problems with the screen shorting when I had solder touching, but once I cleaned that up it works like a charm.

Which head unit do you have?

Keep trying, make sure nothing is shorted, test the connections with a multimeter. Put it on audible beep mode.

well i finally got mine working.....

turns out that the cat5 coupler was KILLING the coltage, there was more than a 90% drop through that coupler!. so now its soldered straight to the HU. I dont plan on using the cd player so its not a big loss. I will post pictures later.

The coupler gauge must be thin.

What you have to do now is take a standard glue gun and melt glue onto the board where the solder points are. This will keep the soldered wires safely in place. I do that all the time.
