    how about this..

What if the radar detector causes the GPS to mark a way point on the map? Then later on if you're within a quarter mile or so of the area where it previously got a signal the computer sounds some sort of warning. Could get annoying, and I don't know how well it would work, but it might be useful.

Think about it. With radar, you have very little time between that radar detector going of and you decelerating from warp speed. If there is any sort of delay from the signal of the radar detector being processed and sent thru the computer and warn you on your screen or with audio, then you will be losing time that you come up to that police. Sometimes you have only a few seconds to get your foot out of it.

No matter how fast the computer is, it can still hickup. I don't want to take that chance when it comes to tickets.

Good luck, not intended as a flame.
I thought about it a while ago.
If one is using a cheap detector, who cares, it is still ineffective.

The proper way to do it would be to buy Valentine 1 and see how it communicates with its external display device, if it is possible to interface those signals to a PC.

Actually, the useful thing about GPS is to be able to log false alarms. Right frequencies, as well as GPS location needs to be logged.

Also.. this data could be compiled and available for download. So if you were driving somewhere new, you would still have the warning. AND, it would allow people without a radar dectector to recieve warnings as well. This would be good for people in states where radar detectors are illegal.

In the UK there are tons of different speed cameras and apparantly radar detectors dont detect them all. However, I saw a website that has a free-to-download database of the longs/lats and camera name of all the cameras in the UK. It is possible to load this spreadsheet into certain gps software, and then you can have a warning of upcoming speed cameras.

lummox: you have the same for north-american cameras somewhere?

or maybe from that site, if you still have the URL, we could find the north american ones...

because, as specified earlier, canadian laws suck and you have huge fines for radar detectors.

At CES, I've asked Escort and whistler and several other radar detector companies about a detector that can be interfaced with a PC and they all looked at me like im a moron for even asking such question. So the answer is no. Whistler told me that it's not impossible to have a USB detector and have software to control it and display warnings and such.

Eh! mars, it's not Canadian Laws, it's provincial law that applies to Radar Detectors in Canada. There is not bylaw from the Canadian Government regulating/banning the use of a Radar detector in Canada.

But there are Provincial Laws in effect in at least (All the Maritimes, Quebec & Ontario). I believe that radar detector use is still legal in Alberta.

regards from someone north of you
