    XM PCR without TOSLINK

Hello all, I was reading up on XM related posts tonight because I was just about to order one.....

Then I saw posts talking about a lot of POPS and NOISE when the XM PCR is connected to a sound card line it (standard analog input).... the posts then end up saying that the use of the Optical connection (with the TOSLINK) removed these pops and whines...

Does this always happen? Is it not possible to get the XM PCR to work in a car with the standard analog output?

If so, what is a good (i.e. - cheap) sound card with Optical input?

I got the pcr for $30 after rebate and then bought the toslink kit for $30 I think. I then got the SB Audigy NX for $60 after rebate and it works great for me. I know a lot of people complain about the power consumption and have problems with the volume going up to full blast after coming out of hibernate (do a search on audigy), but I am ok with it. I can say that I do notice a difference between the outputs. You can use the standard 1/8" output, but then you are using the cheap DAC (digital to analog converter) on the PCR vs. the DAC on the soundcard. I tested it out and can definitely hear a difference. The regular output makes the instruments and vocals all blend together. The optical output allows the soundcard's DAC to, IMO, provide better separation. I also have not noticed any popping noises or static. Just keep in mind that XM radio is compressed, so you will always have sub-cd quality anyway. The cool thing is that if you get the SB audigy, you will have dvd audio, which is incredible!! Can't wait until more titles are available and for cheaper.

I have used the XMPCR with and without the SPDIF convertor....I would rate the analog output as borderline unacceptable...it sounds ok on computer speakers but sounds pretty bad in a car. The SPDIF out made a big difference. Do it right the first time!

Can anybody recommend a decent (but price conceious) Optical Input USB Sound Card.....

I am staying away from the PCI slot because I want to keep the main computer box small..... it WILL fit in the dash...... USB devices can be hidden about in the dash....

Sound Blaster MP3+ is an external USB soundcard, saw it for like 30-40 at Frys. Its the predecessor to the Audigy 2 NX.
