    Can this be done?

Okay, not sure if this can be done, but i think it would kick *** if it could. I have a stock deck, and i was wondering (im not a hardware dev so not sure if this is possible) if you could hook up some kind of 'interpreter' of some sort to interpret the butons on the radio to recognizable keyboard/computer inputs. So i could press a button on the radio, and make it skip to song whatever on the carputer, or use the volume dial to acutally make the carputers sound go up and down. Or even make scripts for every button, almost like the buttons acting like a gamepad of sorts, and have macros/scripts Also if you needed to type something, you could hit one of the buttons, and make the onscreen keyboard come on. I think this would completely replace having a bulky keyboard in my car, and would blur the line between car and puter, and make a more 'stock' feeling carputer.

Edit: i even thought of an easy way of doing this. If you think about it, you wouldnt even have to have the guts of the deck at all. Only thing you would have to do, is take everything out, and have some kind of voltage sensors behind the buttons, and everytime they make contact (button being pressed) they would send a comand to the computer. Then you could buy a new small LCD screen, and you wouldnt even have to have a touchscreen in your car. Im not sure if im just being a dreamer, but i think this theoretically shouldnt be that hard to do, should it?

Actually, this was being discussed in a CD-bus topic... Search for Bus Hacks. I think you'll find it. There should be two topics. One for Clarion and one for Pioneer. I was interested too in this because I'm keeping my deck.

    WOOO WOOO
Now for the easy way out gut a PS1 Controller and wire the leads for the buttons to the ones on the head unit, then use Joystick2Mouse and map the buttons, and enjoy! it would be a little complicated, and I'm sure the volume knob would be a ***** but thats where I would start.
*psst* while your there try to integrate a slim line/slot loading DVD drive in there for the full effect

Yeah, i planed on gutting it out, and putting a slim DVD drive in there also. Also, im not sure how big one of those volume knobs are for the pc are, but if they are the right size (which im sure they arent, too big) you could just replace the deck's knob with it. And for the PS1 controler idea, you could get one of those horrible nostomo controlers (its a controler/small keyboard combo) and take it apart, and wire that bad boy to the headunit. That way you have ALOT of buttons, and you dont have to somehow convert the ps1 > pc to make it work.

i just wire up the PS1 controller to the LPT port not hard at all, i only said that because you can use up to 5 at once (with the multi tap) and the first 4 can be used in gaming and the 5th could be the head unit control, just tossing ideas out there to see if anything bites
