how about some help with making custom cases

i've seen a lot of materials (plexi + metal) etc discussion...

but nothing about HOW to go about making a case, start to finish.

I've really got no ideas on how to do this, tools, materials, methods, etc.. so if someone wants to lay out a step-by-step for me, that'd be sweet!

(runnin a miniITX right now in a standard miniITX case, BUT since its slow and supercrappy I want to upgrade to an old desktop I have... slimlined of course, with some sweet little neon, etc)

anyone thats got time has my unending gratitude.

the reason why you dont see many guides to making carPC cases is because everyone's cars, tastes, needs are different. Everyone is going to build a different case according to what they want and how it will fit their car better. You can check out my site below and get an idea of how i build my truck pc, but there are no step by step instructions. Still lots of pics you can use as reference though. My site is not 100% complete yet, but should be enough there to get you started.

    Goodluck.

    thanks man, appreciate the help.

so some questions. i'm assuming you used (eventually)6 sheets of plexi glass?
(even if it was less initially, after you were done cutting everything) .. what thickness did you use? and how did you hold them together (glue type, etc.)

    I posted this 10 min's ago

Mine is light box made from clear, frosted and white plexiglass the frosted is the sides and the white is the back plate and the clear is the front window it's made like a custom amp rack there is metal that has 1/4" holes all over it running on the inside of the sides the MB is a M10K and is suspended with 1/4"x1" steel spacers and bolts all the cables come off the MB and run under the MB and out a hole hidden under the MB all the metal has been brushed and clear coated and there is green and blue neon behind the frosted sides lighting the whole thing up on the inside I am planing to add some black lights also but the M10K is not realy UV reflective so I might not do it

it looks *****IN I will take a pic and post it for you when I can

I am a custom stereo installer so tell me what u want it to look like and I will help you out plexiglass looks great and is not to expensive aluminum and stainless steel are my case is held together with aluminum angle iron and revits I wanted the rough metal look other wise plexi and other plastics are glued together it's better to have a plastics shop do it for you it's not easy if you have never done it metal well it's the same deal if you have never done it it's better to contract the job to a shop that has the experince and tools metal work costs a lot for labor and wood is a bad choice because of moisture isues it's not important with amps but pc's are much more sensitive plexi is the way to go it's cheeper in labor to have built and is cheeper than aluminum or stainless mine cost about $100 in parts but I got raped at the metal shop they made me buy a half sheet of perf steel it was $40 all I need was about $5 worth

all that is mentioned on my site if you looked through the hardware section. But to answer your question, i used 1/4" plexiglass and a glue called Weld-on 3 found at tapplastics.com. I live close by the actual store so i just went there and bought the glue and plexi. You can even have them cut your plexi to size for you to,that saves you money because you dont have to buy excess plexi.

6 small sheets of plexi, yes. Basic rectangle/square structure does the job for everything.

you may want to check out computer case mod forums likehardforum.com and vhforums.net not all of the posts there will be cases completly from scratch but they have probably put a computer into just about anything that can be considered a case.

I used acrylic 1/4" sheets. Basically yes it was cut into a box shape and drilled holes for mounting, fans.. etc. I used Metholyene Chloride to hold it together (like epoxy for acrylics). I'm sure plexiglass has something similar.
    Mine needs to be updated.

    Acrylic IS plexiglass.

port20, cant wait to see your case.

But, I think you might need a new keyboard. All your punctuation buttons seem not to be working
