Post How about a BUSlink's Portable USB Hard drive ?

I was thinking about getting on of these lovelies!! http://stores.yahoo.com/micro3net/buslink.html
My idea is to get a small(ish) ide hard drive just for the operating system and the software and then get one of these for my MP3's. I would mount this in a DIN slot above my head unit (so it's easy to install and take out) and then I could take it into the house and USB it to my server, copy on new tracks and update the playlist. Plus, this way if my car gets stolen, I don't lose my toons!!
Let me know if you have any concerns about this idea, I can't think of any!!
    Best regards,

    Check this out http://www.cablesamerica.com/asp/sea...fo&value=26810
it is a ide-to firewire adapter that would allow you to make your IDE harddrive plug and play via firewire.

Do you think that Firewire to IDE board is just for hard drives? Cause that would be pretty useful for a IDE DVD at the front of your car... running firewire back to your trunk.

It doesn't really specify. Sometimes is says for IDE Hard drives and other times just for IDE Interface.

The thing is - the USB hard drives will get their power from the USB cable!
The Fire-wire ones will need power supplied to them (won't they?) If so - you'll need to either put a power supply in the front of the car as well as the back - or run the 4 wires from the back to the front and risk power loss!
I'm going to be fitting my DVD player in the panel behind the centre arm rest of the back seats (stealth is the name of the game!) so it's accessable from the cabin but the back of the drive is in the boot (trunk).

    Oops - i'm wrong - forgive me!!
The drive needs power as well!

It should run off my inverter - just as long as it's not too many watts!

I would think it would work for any IDE device. It's worth a try anyway. You could always return it. here is one made by pyro that states it works with other IDE devices http://www.solutions4sure.com/Produc...=92964&iid=342

also all the power is carried by the firewire cable/adapter so there is no need for an external power heres their website http://www.lavalink.com/

Startech makes an external firewire housing (click here). According to the spec page this will work with any IDE ROM drive device (including DVD), and power is provided through the firewire cable (no power adapter needed). They also make a USB version, but this would be slower and an external power adapter would be required.

Ya, I would trust the Pyro and Startech one a little more but then the price starts to get up there... and other things come into range like scsi.
