the laptop is not in my trunk yet (just on the floor for now), but when it is, i don't want to have to run to the trunk every time i want to turn on the laptop. does anyone know of a good way to wire up an external on/off switch to a laptop?

yes, it's called soldering. open it up, solder a couple wires onto the power switch, and run them to the front with a new switch.
