Would it damage modem to use connector as on/off?

I would like to wire up an external on/off on my laptop.

I was hoping the port was a 4 pin modem cable, but it is only two.

If I wire the on/off switch internally to the modem port and then use a phone cable to close the contacts would closing those two modem contacts together damage the modem?
