Post Grabled 4x40 LCD Output - IEEE cable needed?

I got this 4x40 LCD and I can't make it work without garbling the output. It just gets random stuff like 0's out of nowhere. I know my soldered connections are good. Does using a IEEE cable vs. a non IEEE cable make any difference? I'm using a non IEEE cable. I have tried to make three more LCD's and they all do the same thing. I've tested them on 3 computers and get the same garbage every time. I can't figure this out I have a 2x16 lcd that works fine all the time.

I wish I had good advice for you, but mine was just popped together with two cables I had laying around (parallel port cables).

Really nothing special, what software are you using to drive the display?

I use it with LCDprint in DOS and lorty's plugin for windows. It doesn't really show up with LCD print, maybe one line will be one character off, but with Lorty's spectrum analyzer going it really gets messy.

If you have already done this then disregard...

You have to use the latest Lorty driver to work with the 4x40 LCD, and remove the previous .dll's for the older version.

Other than that, you need to make the mp3car.ini file the same as the 4x40default.ini file. And of course double check the settings in the .ini.

Also something that has come up is making sure your display is getting a good 5v power supply. Mine pulls it from the PS2 plug using an old mouse wire, separate from the parallel port wires.

Mine happened to work once I got the latest Lorty plugin, no real tweaking required.
